uk visitor planning to hire car fro 10 days collect and return at jfk.
any help on best service welcome.
in particular prefer to use company where can walk to outlet ie wish to avoid desk in terminal and then transit bus to actual car garage.
going to explore long island so in and out of location hopefully easy enough

I doubt very much if you can walk to any of the rental outfits from the terminal. The airport is vast, outdated, spread out. No room for rental car parking lots as far as I know.

I think that one can take the AirTrain to the car rental agencies. If not, rental agencies usually have shuttle buses.

You can't walk to any of the Car Rental agencies at JFK. All the major car rental companies are located in the Federal Circle Station "Transportation Center" building which you get to by using the SkyTrain from any of the terminals.

Picking up your rental car is easy and usually quick. Once you deplane and claim your luggage (if any) simply exit the terminal and follow the signs for the AirTrain. Board the train and depending on which terminal you arrived at the ride will take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes. The AirTrain runs 24/7. Exit the train at Federal Circle and follow the signs to your car rental company.

You may want to check the cost of the same rental from points in the city. It is often significantly cheaper to rent cars off-airport in the US.

At JFK the car rental offices are NOT at the terminals - you need to take a shuttle bus. And it's best to arrange from home - so you can get a package including insurance that would be much less than you would pay here.

Don't think the cost is any less in Manhattan - esp since there is often a shortage of cars in the summer - but you can certianly check with whichever agencies offer UK special packages.

Not sure where you plan on exploring on LI - but do remember that in the summer many hotels/inns have minimum nights (2 or 3) esp for weekends. And the good deals go very quickly.

Just like Micheal said, some rental companies have shuttle buses set up at the airport. I believe if you book before arriving, a shuttle bus will be there to take you to the outlet. I usually check the app, carrentalsmarket dot com to find out the best rate and then book. When I get to the airport I will take a shuttle to the outlet and pay.

JFK car rentals do not have shuttle buses. You take the Airtrain. Roamsaround gave you the correct details.

Just to clarify something about NYC car rentals. It is generally NOT cheaper to rent in the city. Quite the opposite actually. It's usually at least a third more expensive, other than weekdays in the winter.

Moreover, on weekends from late Spring to Fall, there's usually not a car to be had in NYC because residents rent them to escape. And if you are not coming into NYC, you do NOT want to come into the city just to rent a car. However, it may be cheaper to rent from a non-airport Long Island office, but I don't know which ones are easy to reach from Long Island Railroad stations, so unless you get some specific advice, renting from the airport is probably best.

You'll likely get a better package rate in the UK including insurance than we can possibly get here, so you'll do ok for price.
