Hip Hotel in Seattle
I am looking to spend a weekend in Seattle in August for the first time. Can anyone recommend which neighborhood to stay in for cool shops and hot bars as well as a hip, modern hotel in the $150 per night range? I have heard mixed things about the Ace Hotel so would like a few more opinions... Thanks!

Which of those things could you live without? Try the Andra, The Monaco, pray for a deal at the W, otherwise either plan to pay more or lower your expectations. Only things I've heard about the Ace are not all that good, and not all that mixed. YMMV. Today's <i>Wall Street Journal</i> has an article about how Starwood are planning a budget version of the W, which they will be calling - wait now - the "XYZ" - I'm expecting retro/sleek/IKEA and or shabby chic, but who knows what demons dwell in the dreams of hotel marketing people? Not yet, anyway. |
The Hotel Monaco is a very hip hotel with great service. I don't remember how much I spent there,but if $150 is at the low end of your range(you said the 150 range) you should be fine.They have wine tastings in the lobby in the evening and a great restaurant.They'll also bring up a goldfish to your room so you don't get lonely,and they will bring you a yoga mat if you want to take the class they offer on their in -house tv channel.

I'm not crazy about the location of the Ace. It's in Belltown which is hip enough generally speaking, but not so appealing after dark. Near plenty of bars and clubs, but they are kind of spread out, not like on a strip or anything.
The Pike/Pine corridor on Capitol Hill is quite a happening place currently but I can't think of any hotels in that neighborhood besides one B&B (Gaslight which is nice but hardly hip or modern). Downtown Seattle has a huge range of all kinds of hotels, but again they are not central to everything. Downtown gets pretty deserted after dark. Seattle is a city of distinct neighborhoods, and it doesn't quite line up with what you are seeking. Andra's a good suggestion but it is an old hotel that has been remodeled not hip and modern. |
W is probably the closest we've got to hip, but it's a lot more than $150.

Not hip especially but new, clean, and a reasonably good deal - try the Broadway branch of the Silver Cloud Inn. Walkable from the Pike/Pine zone, Broadway itself (plenty of hip or hippish or gay-hip etc. places, bars, restaurants, shops) plus good bus transport downtown.

I noticed a B&B on 1st near the Virgina Inn & Le Pichet (so about 4 blocks south from Ace). Can't tell from the street what it's like, but had "best of" stickers on the door. I've got the name at work (will post later).
I fear Seattle is simply not cool, hot and hip in an obvious way (more of an insider place and acquired taste) is why we're having trouble thinking of something that fits your request. |

1923 1st Ave doubles $110 clearly not any of those adjectives you mentioned but the price is right and the location excellent. i don't know a thing about the place so this is not a recommendation just info. maybe those best of stickers were simply B&B association now that i think of it. |

The watertown in the U district is very hip but not in or even particularly near downtown. The decor is very sleek scandinavian and they have "interest carts" DVD players for adults, kids, art cart, popcorn and movies etc for different ages, plus bikes for riding around town.

The W and Monaco are hip but the location lacks for hip bars.
I actually like the location of the Ace hotel and also El Gaucho has a hotel upstairs now, same area. My friends (mid 30's) and I hang out around here often at night and have never thought it to be anything but great for bar/restaurant hopping. Andra is the new of the hip and has a pretty decent location also. All the comments you've gotten are pretty spot on. Have fun! p.s. stormygirl- thanks for adding your comments about belltown at night, that's good to know. it's where my office is so my daytime impression seems not accurate. definitely there is more happening around here than up on Broadway these days (i would no longer include Broadway as an interesting district unfortunately, it's mostly boarded up at the moment).

I hope Andra is nice, I'm staying there in July! it isn't 150 bucks though, I am paying nearly 250 for it (and hope I didn't get ripped off).

Andra has a good location and it is recently remodeled in a tasteful manner; however, with $250 to spend you might be able to get more for your money.
