Hilton Turtle Bay Resort, North Shore
I am planning a trip to Oahu and want to stay at the Hilton Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore. I have enough frequent stay points for a free week stay, but just want to see what everyone thinks of it who has stayed there before. Also, is there anything else around the hotel to see and do, particularly great beaches and restaurants? We want to get away from the cement jungle known as Honolulu! Thanks

We stayed there about 4 years ago. It is a beautiful setting but the hotel was in dire need of refreshing. Everything showed it's age. I don't know what time of year you will be there but the north shore in the winter has the BIG waves so most beaches are closed to swimmoing. Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline are must see sites if you're there in winter months.
That was our 2nd try at Oahu and we won't go back. The other islands have so much to offer.
Consider a hilton property on another island- like the Waikalao on the Big Island. It's really a lot nicer. I don't recall what other properties Hilton has in Maui or Kauai.
Oahu has lots of military and the housing, etc. reflects it on Oahu even on the north SHore. Oahu is generally very congested and just not my idea of paradise. Check out other options , please.
Bart
We stayed at Turtle Bay within the last 4 years, and it was nicely renovated. Personally, we think this area of Oahu is as nice as other islands - far better than Honolulu! Other things to do: Snorkel at Honouma Bay, hike up to a falls (can't remember its name but the trailhead is east of Turtle Bay about 8 miles. There is a small parking lot there). The condos at Turtle Bay are nice also.
My favorite place of all the islands is on Kauai north shore, near the roads end beyond Honolai (sp?), at a place called Colony Bay Resort. Beautiful beaches, best snorkeling anywhere, laid back atmosphere.
Mike - haven't stayed there in years but on each of our trips now (usually twice a year) we always stop there during a drive around the island. It's our favorite place for horseback riding - the only one that goes along the beach. We then like to have a drink at the lanai area on the rocks in back of the pool and just enjoy the incredible beauty and the waves crashing against the shore. From there we take a leisurely drive to have lunch at Jamison's By the Sea, enjoying the scenery along the way, and then drive thru the old village of Hialewa (sp?) Lots of restaurants there, and some shopping.
The hotel is old but decent, but is rather remote so unless you have a car, you're kinda stuck.
That North shore and the drive up there from Diamond Head is worth seeing tho.
