Hilton Head, SC ideas?

We will be driving down to FL to visit MIL once again near the end of October and made reservations in Hilton Head for 3 nights on the way back - we have never been there before and since we will be making this trek fairly often, want to explore different places along the coast.

Not having any interest in golf, tennis, clubs, bars and the like we would like to see and do things a bit off the tourest path. We enjoy nature, history, gardens, restaurants - that sort of thing. I am thinking we are beyond swimming weather but enjoy long fall walks on the beach in any case. Any suggestions?

The good news is the beach at Hilton Head is hard-packed sand, so it's ideal for those long walks you enjoy!

We always rent bikes when we go to Hilton Head-the bike paths all around the island are great. Restaurants we like are Sea Shack, Eat, Black Marlin, Skullcreek Boathouse and Old Oyster Factory. The beach is great for walking.

Where are you planning to stay?

Hiking or biking the excellent and beautiful paths at HHI is a major attraction. At low tide the beaches are ideal for a trek. Calm near shore and the broad creeks are perfect for kayaking.

We also like Skull Creek Boathouse.

If you are staying at the Marriott in Palmetto Dunes you are on one of the nicest beaches in Hilton Head. Hotel has a great oceanfront pool and bar, and ocean is still warm for swimming in October. It's our favorite month. Bike rental is available right at hotel, and kayak rental across the street. Good lagoon system within Palmetto Dunes for beginning kayak (rent by the hour) flat water-can't get lost or drift out to sea, water only a few feet deep in most places. Alexander's Restaurant next door to kayak rentals. Only open for dinner-reasonable early bird specials if you like to eat early. Be advised-Hilton Head is difficult to navigate after dark when you don't know your way around-poor lighting and hidden signs.
For daytime exploring, consider taking a tour or the ferry to Dafuskie Island, or visit the nature preserve in Sea Pines. Also off island just over the bridge, Pickney Island Wildlife Refuge--great hiking, bird watching, butterfly garden.

I was also going to suggest the nature preserve in Sea Pines -- haven't done it myself, but family members enjoyed it last month. I've wanted to go but never got around to it, will definitely go next time I'm there!
