Hilton Head/Myrtle Beach

My husband, 23 year old daughter and I are all teachers, so would like to drive to someplace warm over April vacation(from Boston, MA) to escape this brutal winter. We are big Disneyworld fans, but went there over Christmas break and don't want to drive that far. We'd like to spend about four days and would appreciate any information or recommendations about either place. Hotels, beaches, things to do, restaurants, etc. Do any of you have a preference as to which area is better? We went to Virginia Beach last summer and really disliked it, so we're trying to avoid another travel fiasco. Thanks so much for your advice.

Instead of Myrtle Beach, I would go to Litchfield Beach. If you don't like Virginia Beach, you'll hate Myrtle. It's very commercial. Litchfield has zoning restrictions so you won't see the neon lights and flashing signs for Ripley's Believe it or Not. It's about 20 miles south of Myrtle. Hilton Head is also nice if you find the right resort. I like Sea Pines. In Litchfield, Murrell's Inlet is where all the great seafood resturants are located. My all time favorite is Lee's Inlet Kitchen.

Olivia, I must disagree with you about Myrtle Beach. Yes, there are horribly tacky areas but it is really turning into a nice place.

I do agree with you on staying at Litchfield. It is very nice.

I think that Hilton Head is gorgeous. It is lush, tropical and even the Wendy's adheres to building codes. We rented an oceanfront condo (also Sea Pines)from one of the many brochures available and were very happy. I agree with one of the previous posters that Myrtle Beach is tacky.

Although I am not a large fan myself of Mrytle beach I was there last year for a family affair. Rather than staying with family we stayed at Kingston Plantation for a week. It was very nice. If you did not like Virginia beach I think I would veto MB. I would choose Hilton Head. Just my opinion.

Another area to consider is Isle of Palms. Nice beach, family atmosphere, close to Charleston which has tons of history and lots of things to do. I agree with other posters that Myrtle is tacky and very commercial. HH is ok but IOP has more sights and restaurants close by.

Good point. You can't swim in April and the sunbathing will be touch and go. HH is all about golf and beach to me. Charleston might have more to do.
