Hilton Head beach or Tybee Island

I am going to Savannah for a long weekend in July and am looking to spend one day at the beach. I've never been to Tybee Island. I know its close to Savannah but I'm thinking this beach will be just like Myrtle Beach, except even more people packed into a smaller area. I've been to a beach at Hilton Head, so I know the quality of these beaches. I'm looking to keep the cost down to around $100 a night for a hotel room. I found a Comfort Inn that is on Hilton Head and supposedly within walking distance to the beach. Any thoughts on this hotel?

Which beach do you suggest and which hotel that is within walking distance to the beach do you suggest within my price range?

Thanks in advance.

Can't help with the hotel, but I did want to tell you Tybee normally isn't that crowded, especially the north beach near the lighthouse!

When we lived in Savannah, we'd often drive over to HH for the public beach off Folly Field Rd as the surrounding area is so pretty, but if we were short on time, we just went out to Tybee to the north beach. It's truly not another Myrtle Beach.

Tybee is nothing like Myrtle Beach. I am assuming that you will be staying in Savannah, and drive down to the beach for a few hours. The closer you are to the North end of the beach, the less crowded it is.

If you don't have a good tan, you really really don't want to stay out in the sun for more a couple of hours with scads of sun block. Going home with a bad case of sunburn is the pits.

Hilton Head is a prettier beach in my opinion, but so much of it is "private" or restricted access.

Agreed, Tybee is not as crowded as the much, much bigger Myrtle Beach, but both do have their share of rednecks.

As for beach quality (sand, surf), it's almost exactly like HH as they are very, very close to each other (geographically if not driving-wise).

We've stayed at the Comfort in on HH numerous times, though we're usually down there off-season with our dog. It's an OK place, nothing fancy, and seems to get its share of smokers, but it's got a fairly nice pool and it's about 4-5 minute walk to the beach (it's just across the street, but you have to walk a block and a half to the beach access).

We also like it because it only a couple blocks to lots of bars/restaurants around Coligney Plaza.

Ditto. Tybee is about as far from being like Myrtle Beach as can be. It reminds me of Jekyll in that respect. If you are Savannah, Tybee is just a few minutes away.

Don't know anything about Tybee Island, but we stayed at the HHI Hilton Oceafront resort through Priceline last year in early August for $90/night. This was more than a 50% savings on the room and it was a huge room, almost a suite, with pretty well equipped kitchen, sitting area and 2 queen sized beds. The resort has 2 pools and is directly on the beach. Check www.betterbiddingfortravel.com to see how prices in HHI compare for 2006. We spent 6 nights there and had a great time.
