Hilton Head at Christmas

I am thinking about taking my mother to Hilton Head for a few days during the Christmas holidays. I would like feedback from experienced vacationers about weather, things to do and transportation around HH. What is the weather like at Christmastime? Is it warm enough to get into the water? What attractions would be recommended? As far as transportation goes, should a car be rented? Is there transportation from the airport. It appears that some airlines fly into Savannah, GA. Is this a long was from HH?
Thanks,
Victor

Well, I guess you're not from anywhere around South Carolina. I would expect daytime temps at Hilton Head in the 50s-60s and the water to be pretty cold. No swimming for me! I would think you'd need a rental car, as Savannah is about 2 hr drive.

As per the Weather Channel, the average high in December is 60 and the average low 40.The Savannah airport is an easy 50-60 minute drive to HHI.I would recommend a rental car. HHI is very low-key at that time of year and feels like heaven compared to the NE. From earlier (GA) POSTS, I'm hoping to visit Savannah this year to see their holiday decorations & hit A few restaurants. Not much to do at HHI beyond tremendous biking and hugh, endless, deserted beaches.

Sorry, ceejay - HH is only about a 40 minute drive (at most) from Savanah airport. We have friends who live on the island and make that trip a couple of times a year.

To Victor: You'll need a rental car if you want to see the island and visit the surounding areas (day trips to Savanah, Beaufort, etc.) Like ceejay said expect daytime temps in the high 50's or low 60's. Water will be too cold for swimming unless you are a card carrying member of the Polar Bear Club.

Thanks to all that replied. I am from PA and was thinking HH might be more like Florida. Apparently HH is not "south" enough. Also, it sounds like HH is not the right place for a Christmastime get-away.
Thanks again,
Victor
