Planning a summer Hilton Head vacation but totally unfamiliar with area. Where are the best areas to stay: Sea Pines, Palmetto, or elsewhere? Thanks

The two you mention are my favorites. If you stay in Sea pines, you don't have to pay the obnoxious $5 gate fee if you do something inside the plantation. Shipyard is also OK. Just get a map of the island with the "plantations" shown on it. Then make sure you get one that's beachfront and reasonably close to the main part of the island (where the traffic circles are)

There's not a significant difference among "Plantation" resorts and you can't go wrong with either one. Sea Pines is the largest and has the most amenities, but honestly, the beaches are essentially the same.

We have vacationed in Hilton Head a number of times and have found Sea Pines a great place for a family vaction. It can be busy in Hilton Head in the summer and Sea Pines is away nestled away from the hubbub. There are great off road biking trails. The kids can ride bikes or rollerblade on their own to the stores and for ice cream. Our favorite location in Sea Pines is off of South Beach Lane. Even more private than the rest of Sea Pines.

Has anyone stayed at the Marriot resorts? One is called Barony (sp) and the other- Grand Ocean. Both are on the beach it appears.
i was just curious, as I thought we may use some marriott miles for a vacation early summer.

Last Sep we stayed at the Westin Resort in Port Royal. It was very nice, with several pools and bar/food areas and beachfront. It was a relaxing place. It was only 10-20 min to any place on the island, and very easy to get in and out. Be sure to have dinner at the Old Fort Pub, in a neat old building right on the bay and great food. Also saw a very entertaining performance at the Jazz Corner in a shopping area, The Village at Wexford.

annesherrod - Mariott Grand Ocean is very nice, relatively new Vacation Club resort. Has lots of amenities and very nice two bedroom condo units with whirlpool tubs, full kitchens, etc. Pool areas and beach are very nice as well with several jacuzzis on the property. It is located just outside Sea Pines Plantation, with lots of good restaurants nearby too. Not sure how the rates are for non-timesharers though. It's a very nice property.

We like staying in an ocean-front villa in Palmetto Dunes Plantation (a newer developed plantation than Sea Pines). It is centrally located on the island, which we prefer.(Of course you do have to pay the annoying $5 entrance fee to see the Sea Pines Harbor Town which I do suggest seeing if you go. It is very picturesque with its light house and quaint shops, though one time is enough for me.)I suggest Windsor Court, Windsor Place and Hampton Place villas as the nicest in Palmetto Dunes. They have great beaches, are beautifully landscaped and are well kept properties. They are individually owned so decor of interiors can vary though. The Marriotts are very nice but seem to be more expensive if you are not a timeshare owner. Enjoy your vacation. We love Hilton Head.

We like Palmetto Dunes. We rent a house in the more secluded portion of the plantation. This way we get our own pool and access to more secluded beaches (we rent through island getaway). The location of Palmetto Dunes is great, the grounds are beautiful, and it's very peaceful. I used to think Sea Pines was great when I was a kid & went w/my family (we didn't stay in a plantation then). However Sea Pines now seems kind of dated - is there a decent beach there? I've never seen one. Anyway, last time we went we didn't even visit Sea Pines. There is a great shopping/dining/marina across the street from Palmetto Dunes which is nicer & newer than Sea Pines.

Have stayed at Disney's Hilton Head Resort many times. It is not on the ocean side but they have a beach house & unlimited access to SeaPines. They have a lot of family activities, pool games, bike rentals, cook outs... Although it is part of the DVC club (Disney's timeshare program) you can still rent, if there is space available.

They are all about the same. Just make sure you get on the beach or at least close to it. We won an auction (skyauction.com) for a place in Sea Pines last year and it turned out to be 1/4 mile or more from the beach. It's worth it to pay to be on the beach.

We also rented through Island Getaway. We rented an oceanfront villa in Windsor place. Our family had three condos in the building and they were all nicely kept. The beach out front was great. It is a nice family vacation spot. I highly recommend it.

last summer we stayed at the marriot Grande Ocean - I can HIGHLY recommend it. 5 pools, tennis, great beach and fun bar right on the water. VERY family oriented.

I think the poster must have put this on every state's site. It kind of defeats the purpose of pulling up a state you're interested in visiting, and finding unrelated posts.

Mari, if you're really asking "how", I think you do it by holding the shift key down and arrowing down the entire state list, when posting your question.

If you're asking "why" I sure don't know!

Something's going on with the forum. This "Hilton Head" thread is showing up on the Alaska site, too. I have also noticed that after posting, I am taken all the way back out to "United States" instead of going back to the particular area in which I was posting. I hope they get this problem fixed soon!
