Hilo Experts HELP

When I visited Hilo in 09/2000 I remember I visited a place (sorry can’t remember the name) and it was on a mountain where you had to go down in your car through somewhat of a dirt road once you passed that you parked your car and walked to the beach from there it seems that their was a split in the mountain and to get to the other side you had to cross the water very shallow but current was a little strong and you could go hiking from there. I remember their were a lot of horses around there and this was about 1 ½ hour drive from the Volcano National Park (this is where I was staying). What I found fascinating about that place I remember telling the girls in my group (they are all from Puerto Rico) that I could have sworn that I heard a Coqui frog of course they dismissed my hearing and years later we come to find out that they do have them their. I am sorry about my vague description of the place but this is what I remember the most. If anyone has at least a clue of what am talking about I’d appreciate your input, next year I am taking another Puerto Rican friend and would like her to hear her islands pet, with due respect for those who are not thrilled with the noise.
Thank you.

Is the water you are talking about, a river or a stream? Or the Ocean?

Actually I want to say that it was a river going into the ocean is this possible?
Thank you

You've given a pretty good description of Waipi`o Valley...use google.com and should find photos to help you.

The road into the valley is _extremely_ steep -- 4WD is now required.

As for the coqui, they can be heard all over Hawai`i island now. I personally like the sound, but perhaps of hundreds of them were "singing" while I was trying to get to sleep, I might feel differently! 8-)

Thank you for your help, I think that may be it. Again thank you.

auntiemaria--many years ago we stayed in lodging in Waipi'o--it was very primitive, but afforded us the opportunity to basically have the Valley to ourselves in the morning. Quite amazing. Is there still lodging the Valley?

Autiemaria:
I did what you suggested and that is it. Thank you very much.
