Hillwood Museum
First of all, is very early October a bad time to visit the gardens?
This looks to be close to the Shoreham Omni (Rock Creek Park)would it be walkable? We just watched a documentary of Washington DC and it showed the gardens & some of the Russian art treasures acquired by Ms. Post. I hadn't read or heard anything about it, so I thought I'd check the experts here online! A search on here brought up almost nothing. |
The distance is over 2 miles. You'd probably be better-off saving your time and energy, and either taking a cab from the hotel, or taking the Metro from the Woodley Park station 2 stops up Connecticut Ave to the Van Ness station. This past summer has been good gardening weather in DC, and everything still looks really good.

October would be an excellent time to visit - still plenty of flowers, plus the fall mums. And, maybe some leaf color in the woods surrounding.
The collection of Russian art and other treasures, particularly a magnificent Faberge egg and some amazing silver and crystal, is astonishing. However, know that it is essential to purchase advance tickets. And, I highly recommend reserving for lunch in the cafe. |
On second thought, the L1 and L2 buses that go up Conn Ave might be a better choice. You can get good routing advice by plugging in addresses at the Metro web site, www.wmata.com . A taxi would be about $5.

I second the recommendation of going to Hillwood. I've been about 3 times and I think the house and collection of Russian treasures is fabulous! You do need book ahead and I'd also book a table for lunch in the cafe. Hmmm...I think I need to plan another trip there myself.
