Hiking - United States

Looking for some suggestions for summer hiking July/August. I am from NY and have never been near the Catskills, Beacon or Highland Falls. I know there's some hiking there but I can't decide what to do.

I'm looking for some hiking not to include any national parks because I've been to most of them. Any suggestions in any state that has at least 2-3 days of some decent hiking would be greatly appreciated. I normally do 7-18 miles per day, depends where I'm at. May/may not want to camp.

If you want to come to CA, we have tons of choices for hiking. We have state and county parks, and lots of National Forest land. In July and August, I would either stick to the coast and the coast range, or go up into the Sierras or Cascades for the higher elevations - avoid the Sierra foothills, central valley, and deserts since they'll be pretty toasty.

The AT goes through an a mazingly wild section of Northern NJ, NY, a gorgeous corner of CT, and a very scenic part of the Berkshires.

Why not start there?

I would be inclined to do the CT-MA section just because I know it is lovely.

Harriman & Bear Mountain State Parks have a wide variety of hiking possibilities, and July should be ideal.

The following pdfs for Harriman SP are pretty large:

The Finger Lakes have lots of hiking possibilities:

The White Mountains of New Hampshire are probably the best hiking east of the Rockies. Hundreds of trails - everything from 40 minute loops to wilderness overnight treks.

Um, anything you're specifically looking for in a hike? That would narrow down the possibilities . . .

Second the recommendation for the CT-MA section of the AT.

Take a look at the NY-NJ Trail Conference http://www.nynjtc.org for descriptions of many local hikes.
