Hiking the Sawtooths
 

We are headed to Stanley, ID in three weeks. Does anyone (hello, johnthedorf!!!) have any great day hikes to recommend?
We will be in Sun Valley one night for dinner. Anyone have any recos there?

On the advice of locals, we've enjoyed dinner at the "traditional" places like the Ketchum Grill and Pioneer Saloon, as well as the Warm Spring Ranch Restaurant (but they seem to be involved in litigation and things may have changed):

But we were last there in 1997!!!, and I know there are a lot of new places in town---Felix's, a Bistro, etc., which may be excellent---or not. I've had very mixed experiences with Idaho restaurants trying to be "upscale". The best thing, unless you get current recommendations here, would be to ask locally for advice.

In any case, I suggest you stop by the Sun Valley Lodge to look around the lobby and halllway leading to the pool---great old movie-star photos and lots of history. We've never dined at the Lodge itself, so I don't know how it is.

Wish i could tell you! My son is a Water Resource Engineer so he'll be breaking trail for me! It better be easy since I'm at sea level and he better not plan on any peaks! Should be great out there though. He did a weekend at the Sun Valley Lodge and raved about the food. Happy trails.

We stayed at the Sun Valley Lodge on our last visit but there is some kind of giant convention being held there during this visit and we could not book there. BOO HOO. We did have dinner there and it was very good. I am a huge wild salmon fan (lucky you, Seattle girl) and they did a marvelous job on it.

Fong...I'll be there after you. I get into Boise on the 5th. Hope you can fill me in on your trip. I'll be in Bend, Or. on June 30. Daughter races Sled Dogs there. I suspect we'll do so light hiking near South Sister. She's been up to El Altar in Ecuador (16,600') and is fearless! Not bad for a 5' Blonde!

We arrive Sun Valley on the 7th and then go up to the Idaho Rocky Mountain Ranch in Stanley for a week. I guess we will learn together, johnthedorf!!!!

Fong: Beautiful. The wildflowers will be spectacular...I'm hoping the fish will be too!

I love berries. In North Carolina raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are ripe by early July. How about in Idaho?

I'm guessing huckleberries! I know in Montana chokecherries (which they make into a fantastic jam) are popular. talked to my son yesterday and he said the Stanley area is beautiful. In driving past it several times I thought so too but time contraints did allow me to delve into the Alpine regions. I'm in Florida by the way.

Huckleberries will be great. I remember several years ago when we visited southern Idaho in late August, they were selling huckleberry milkshakes everywhere.

We also did some great hikes but dont know the names of the trails
There is one to the old trappers cabin that I remember is spectacular
