hiking suggestions in the western US
 

Unexpectedly have a week off in June - love to hike and was thinking of trying to put together a last minute trip somewhere out west.

Have been to Yosemite - hiked 10-12 hrs/day every day we were there and loved it. Looking for similar hiking/exercise experience - any ideas?

Utah...Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands...take your pick...superb hiking.

A great website for that is www.hikersnw.net. I live in the PNW and our two favorite areas for hiking are around the Sisters area in central OR (not too far from Bend) and then the central and north Cascades in WA. There are too many possibilities to list on here, but go check out that site and ask away...everyone there is very knowledgeable. We also enjoy hiking in the Canadian Rockies, but depending on when in June you go that could play into whether or not trails are accessible.

In Moab and Monticello(south of Moab),
Canyonlands ofers a lot of hikes, less or more strenous, in a very gorgeous
site with views, ruins,....
They have a website...
Arches has some hikes, but not too strenous.
So you can have 4 days in Moab and alternate Arches/Canyonlands(island in
the sky district)+/- Dead Horse state park for hikes more or less strenous and
3 days in Monticello for canyonlands(needles district) where hikes are more
difficult.

If a backpacker, you might pick a section of the Pacific Crest Trail.

I second Utah - Bryce, Zion, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Arches (could go on & on)

Posting my vote for Yellowstone and the Tetons.

I agree with Utah - the Narrows in Zion was one of the neatest hikes we've ever done. And June's a good time to do this, b/c usually there's not a threat of rain/flash flooding.

Another really amazing hike we did was to Havasu Canyon in the western part of the Grand Canyon. You hike 8 miles down to the Indian reservation of Supai. You can camp or stay at their basic lodge. (Not super nice, but the surrounding scenery is!) From Supai you hike about 3 miles further past 3 of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen. The water is a beautiful blue green color and the underneath the falls are pools perfect for swimming.

If you are going in late June, be aware that the SW is going to be very hot. I also love hiking around the Columbia River Gorge near Portland, OR. June may be rainy, I'm not sure. July is wonderful there.

we may have an early opening this year.

Narrows at Zion gets my vote as well. Southwest will be verrrrry hot. Might also try the cooler temps of Colorado - Vail, Pikes Peak National Forest, Maroon Bells, etc...
