Hiking in San Diego
I have a free morning on a business trip and would love to do an extended (2-3 hour) hike. I've hiked through Balboa Park before and would like to get out of the downtown area, if possible. Ideally I want to get there by public transportation. Any suggestions?

Torrey Pines State Park next to Torrey Pines Golf Course...a gorgeous state park along the ocean and has some tremendous hikes..

There's also the Penasquitos Canyon Preserve. The Coaster (commuter train that goes from the Amtrack station in downtown San Diego to Oceanside) stops in Sorrento Valley. You could walk from there to the West Canyon entrance.

Thanks. Unfortunately (for me) my free time is on Sunday morning and neither the Coaster nor the buses seem to run up there on Sunday.

Does a bus go down Point Loma to Cabrillo? We were out there this morning and it is spectacular. We were driving and walking around up on top, but the area is filled with hiking trails with vistas to die for. I can't imagine a more wonderful place to hike. Between Lee's current attack of gout, and my old broken ankle acting up, we looked like a couple of invalids, but would sure like to go back there some time and hike those trails around the point.

We enjoyed walking the 2 mile scenic Bayside Trail in Cabrillo and found it quite easy. The lighthouse is well worth a visit.
A bus stops right outside the visitor center. Details at www.nps.gov/cabr Sandy |
