hiking in hana maui

Does anyone have a recommendation for hikes in the Hana area of Maui?
We have hiked the Pipiwai trail, it is one of our all time favorite hikes, but were wondering what other hikes should we do? Any other recommendations for places to see while we are there? Mahalo

You could hike the old King's Highway. It is an ancient footpath that starts at waianapanapa state park three miles north of town. It traverses an old lava flow and borders the rugged coastline. It is a barren, but unique landscape that is one of my favorites. Last year when we were hiking this trail in April we followed a breaching humpback while for about five minutes as it swam about 100 yards offshore.I'd do this hike in the morning as the lava radiates the heat and can make an afternoon hike a little toasty.

The black sand beach at waianapanapa state park is lovely and usually deserted.

Another nice walk is to start at the gate just below Fagan's Cross. Walk up to Fagan's Cross for a nice view of Hana Bay. Go back down to a spur trail to the right and take that two miles to Koki Beach and Hamoa Beach. You cross the highway just before getting to Koki Beach. Keep walking another ten minutes and you'll be at Hamoa Beach, which could be calm and idyllic or raging and wild. Your walk takes you through pasture lands with nice views up Haleakala and down to the ocean. Watch out for cow patties as this is Hana Ranch territory and their cows graze in this area. It is a nice walk even if you do step in a fresh pie. :-d

You might also visit Red Sand Beach, between Hana Bay and Hamoa Beach. Haven't been in years, but, our access was by hugging the side of a cliff to scooch down to the beach. The indigo water against the deep red sand was jaw-dropping gorgeous.

I second the recommendations concerning Fagan's Cross (be sure the bull is not in that pasture) and Hamoa Beach--surely one of the prettiest in Maui, if not the universe (keep an eye out for a wicked shore break).

There are also some very nice trails west of Hana around Wai`anapanapa (Black Sand Beach), showcasing blowholes, lava tubes and--black sand.
