hiking in/around Breckenridge
My 14yr old son and I are going to Breckenridge mid July and need to know know where some good hiking trails can be found. We are not experienced hikers and need trails that are well defined/marked or have guides. Also, any suggestions regarding good white water outfitters and other summer type activities that we could do there would be greatly appreciated.

martym,
Thanks very much for your suggested websites. I did check them out and they were very helpful! |
I highly recommend picking up a book called "The Summit Hiker". It's easily found once you get there, even at Safeway! It's great not only for hikes but also to use as a guide for some beautiful drives.

My experience with trails in Colorado is that they are not well marked if by that you mean frequent signage and directional arrows. Trailheads and the beginning of the trails are marked but after that you are kind of on your own. When one trail branches off of another, it is often marked but not always. Be sure to have a good compass and a map. AND stay below timberline after 1 or 2 pm.

Thanks for your suggestions. Heading to Colorado tomorrow and I appreciated you taking the time to respond. I will pick up a copy of "The Summit Hiker," a compass, and a map.
