I recently perused a book from my local library that covers this exact topic. It contains detailed information on the trails, leel of difficulty, means of access and relevant historical or other facts about the day hikes and nearly all can be reached by public transport from Manhattan. I'm upstate until Tuesday night and can't recall the title or author off-hand. I'll check it on Wednesday when I return home and repost. Feel free to send me a reminder at the above e-mail address (remove the NOSPAM from the address).

Hi Angie. I just hiked today around the Mohican Outdoor Center in Blairstown, NJ. Their web site states that Lakeland Bus Lines serves Newton, and you can call the Lodge for transport to the Outdoor Center. Details are at www.mohicanoutdoorcenter.com.

My two favorite places to hike within 1 hour of Manhattan are Bear Mountain and the Planting Fields. Bear Mountain is in Rockland County. Take the GW Bridge and the Palisades Pkwy for beautiful drive. 1.5 hour hike to top with great views. <BR> <BR>Planting Fields are on Long Island, near Oyster Bay, West of Northern Boulevard. Easy strolling, incredible lawns and trees. <BR> <BR>Enjoy!

There is a really nice walk along the Hudson at Montgomery Place. Check out Fodor's Short Escapes Near New York City: 25 Contry Getaways for People who Love to Walk.

The site http://www.nynjtc.org/trails/no-car.html <BR>is from the New Jersey New York Trails Conference, and lists hiking/outdoor stuff you can do with "no car." The opening line of the site is "Within a 50-mile radius of Columbus Circle in NYC lie scores of wild forest & mountain trails" <BR> <BR>The Appalachian Trail is always a good hike. The area of the Delaware Water Gap, from Mt. Minsi (PA side) to Mt. Tammany (NJ side) is especially beautiful. Martz Trailways 800/233-8604 will go from NYC to Del. Water Gap, PA. <BR> <BR>Have fun!

Here's the book I mentioned i a previous reply: <BR> <BR>"Day Walker" (subtitled "28 Hkes in the New York Metropolitan Area). It's sponsored by the NY/NJ area Trails Council and was published by Anchor Press/Doubleday. ISBN # is 0-385-14140-8 and the Dewey Decimal # (still in use at my local library) is 917.47DA. All of the hikes are moderate to easy and descriptions are well detailed, including specifics re/how to access by train or bus. Five or six of the routes are not easily accessible by public transport but the balance can all be done easily in a day from Manhattan.

I used to take a bus from Manhattan to Tuxedo for many wonderful hikes there. Ask for details at the police station which is right next to the bus stop. I also hiked with Apalachian Mountain Club located in NY city. They led many hikes every Saturday and Sunday at the different levels of difficulties.
