When I was first learning to drive, my instructor gave me a "graduation" test - driving Devil's Slide on the cliff-hanging side! It was white knuckles for a while, but I got into the flow of the downhill curves and I felt I had really accomplished something at the end. In my experience, the most dangerous traverses of Devils Slide have been driving in the opposite - north - direction in fog or dark. Although you are on the "in" side next to the hill going north, there do seem to be a lot of nervous drivers going the opposite way who tend to edge over the center line - I've come close to a head-on several times this way.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear it's open. Someday I wont't be in the driver's seat and I can really enjoy the views from the cliffs.
