Highway 101
We are planning a round trip from Seattle. We want to travel highway 101 in Oregon. Is there a preferred direction that is more scenic (i.e. north to south or south-to-north)?

Apparently, you'll be a few feet closer to the coast going North-to-south. But being pretty north in the northern hemisphere, you'll be looking at the sun more driving that way.

I like rkkwan's reply, but truly, I've never heard anyone here say one direction or the other is preferred. The views are stellar either way.

Sun in the eyes can be a problem driving south and fog can obscure views in either direction. You must get off 101 to fully appreciate the coast. A few highlights are Ecola State Park, Cannon Beach, Newport (especially Nye Beach), Cape Perpetua area including the Sea Lion Cave, the three State Parks near Coos Bay, and Bandon.

If you go north to south or south to north, it will still be the same. LOL Do you mean which part of the coast is the most scenic?
The enitre OC from Brookings to Astoria is gorgeous. We've done the entire drive many times. I think the most scenic is the northern coast, from Newport to Cannon Beach. *** kim*** |
I think north to south is best because it makes it easier to turn off the highway to seaside/roadside attractions. If you're traveling south you don't have to wait to turn left, you can just make an easy right turn.

Thanks all for the responses. I wouldn't think it would matter either, but just had to check since I came across 2 web sites that said you should travel north to south. Just wanted to see if that was a known thing to do, or just their opinion.. My plan right now is to go south to north since this fits in better with what I want to do.
