Highlands, North Carolina
We are planning a stay in The Highlands, North Carolina. Our interests are hiking, biking, white water rafting , swimming and finding bargains on antiques and flea market items. How is this place and can you recomend any lodges and/or cabins? We are not in to the typical tourist attractions such as Cherokee and Gatlinburg. Please give an objective opinion of this area and its scenery.

Scenery: gorgeous
Bargains in antiques: not at all likely
White water: Chatooga River just over the South Carolina border is one of the best whitewater rivers in the East
Hiking: many trails, all levels of difficulty, inquire locally
Biking: very mountainous
Weather: cooler than in the valleys; you are about 4000 feet up. Wonderful in summer

We always use vrbo.com, particularly in the NC Mts. You are very close to tons of waterfalls if that holds an interest. Take a look here - http://www.highcountryhiking.com/, http://gorp.away.com/index.html, http://www.highlandschamber.org/brochures/, http://www.theblueridgehighlander.co...ina/index.html

I like the little shops in Highland especially Highlands Gemshop. Can't recall a flea market.
If you want a good flea market consider Pickens SC. It is open on Wednesdays and is about an hour away.
