High Point moving help
My husband is applying for jobs in several places in North Carolina. I have been able to find info on most of the towns on this forum but one seems to be missing- High Point. Actually, there is a lot on the forum about the furniture there but what it is like to actually live there? We have three kids ranging from high school age to elem. age. We prefer to be able to live someplace that doesn't seem like a busy big city. Like so many people, we are looking for a good place to raise our children. Is there anyone with first hand knowledge of High Point? We are moving from the Pacific Northwest but we are originally from the South so we know and love it but we just don't know exactly the best place to move and don't know if we should accept a job offer in High Point. Housing looks affordable but that does not tell the whole story. I am sure there are lots of NC experts out there who could help me out:) Thanks everyone!

Gosh, this is my week to be "down" on N.C. I guess.
I am from N.C. (Wilmington), and have lived in various places in the state. High Point is one of the two places I would never want to live again. I lived there from 1991 to 1993, and found it to be a grubby mill town with no middle class. Either you were a "have" or a "have not," and I just plain and simple did not like it there. Little culture, few restaurants, catered largely to the Furniture Market, and was rather unattractive to boot. Might be why you can't find much info on it. Sorry to anyone whose toesies I may be stepping on, but that's only my opinion. ;) |
I dated two guys from High Point and have a good girlfriend from High Point and Diana's assessment of Have and Have Nots is a pretty good one.
Also, it is one of those southern towns that if you aren't from there, you'll never really fit in. |

Lordy, GoT, ain't it the truth? I worked for the Phillips' - HP Royalty - and so was admitted to the inner sanctum of HP society by virtue of association. Lucky me! ;;) I've been all over this state and don't know of another town anywhere nearly as small as HP with a Rolls Royce dealership. |
I agree totally.
One thing I would like to add, if you visit you must have BBQ at Prissy Polly's. |
TGFF-thank God for Fodor's. Wow, you guys are life savers:) Thanks for the candor, we will keep looking for just the right place-somewhere else.
