hey wildflower, need info on sierra vista az area

I read your nice trip report to s.e. AZ which is where I would like to visit in Feb. Where did you stay in Sierra Vista? I would like to stay a month in that area. Do you have any recommendations? Do any other Fodorites have suggestions?

Hello Seniormsuedu
We stayed in Carroll Drive Apartments. It is a very inexpensive and simple place but clean and it served us well. It is located just around a corner from the main gate to Fort Huachuca.
We had a small kitchen, large living room, bedroom and, of course, bathroom. We had a maid service twice a week. In regard to our kitchen, it had only one huge pot and another one was very small. We were ready to buy one but managed without it.
There is a self service laundry facility and very nice swimming pool which we used a few times during our stay in April. A few minutes drive there is Safeway great supermarket.

We were happy with our accommodation and would return again. If you decide to stay there I suggest asking for a second floor apartment and facing Carroll Drive which is a very quiet street, otherwise you will have a view of a parking lot from your windows. There are three buildings and we stayed in the one next to the laundry room.

If you enjoy outdoor activities including bird watching, hiking and beautiful scenery I bet you will enjoy Sierra Vista. There is so much to do although Sierra Vista is nothing special but the area is fascinating.
Any questions please ask and I will be more than happy to share our experiences with you. Meanwhile check this website www. carrolldriveapts.com and also all posts by E. on this board. Her help with SE area of Arizona is priceless

Thank you so much, Wildflower, for your very helpful information. I saw Carroll Apts. on the Sierra Vista site and it kinda looked like student rental, but your description sounded better. I am also toying with Gateway Suites, but only if I could get a monthly rate.

I want to go somewhere where there is a lot of nature and warmer than Michigan other than Florida. I vist the Colorado Plateau country every fall and love the southwest.

You must have a busy life between Alaska and the southwest. Good for you!

Loved to get this nice response on our wonderful Fodor's.

We met a few people at Carroll Drive. Three couples were from Michigan spending there one or two months, another couple from New Jersey stayed there for one week. They were all retired but very active and interested in all outdoor activities.

If you go to Ramsey Canyon try to take a tour, which is included in your admission price, with Mark Pretti. He is a guide who works a part time for Nature Conservancy. We were so impressed with him as a guide that we hired him for a private half-day tour. He was amazing! Just a little tip as we heard there are many great people at Ramsey Canyon.

I don't know anything about Gateway Suites but I will be eager to learn about it from you before our next trip there. Let me know.
My husband and I were planning on returning to Sierra Vista in April 2004 but decided to go to Corsica instead so SV has to wait maybe until October/November 2004. You are right, we have busy life with all those trips we take. And we love it!
I hope you will like Sierra Vista as much as we did.

About Gateway Suites. Our room was nice but small. I don't think it would a good place to stay for a month.

Thanks Wildflower and earlxx. When I called Carroll Dr. apts., I found out they do not accept pets. Since I am taking my small dog, that took care of that. The motels charge a huge fee for pets. So I will not be going to Sierra Vista after all. Just Chicago at Xmas.
Thanks for info.

seniormsuedu, we are going to be in Chicago before Christmas! Flying home Christmas morning. It is a birthday gift to my husband. Trying to figure out how to make this trip to Chicago very special. We'll be having his birthaday dinner at TRU which he loves. Any suggestions how to make this stay in Chicago unforgettable?

Too bad about Sierra Vista but don't give up. Did you think about renting a house or a cabin for a whole month? Did you get in touch with a Real estate agents about rentals?
I would love to spend there one month every year.

Well, I have been planning my Chi trip also. Our party will be my daughter and two granddaughters 3 and 4.5. We will stay at Homewood Suites, recommended on Fodor's for families, with a separate bedroom, pull-out couch in l.r. and small kitchen, also a pool on the top floor.

One place where we will be eating is Ibericco on north LaSalle, a short taxi ride. It is casual, affordable, and has wonderful tapas - small portions of things you order as you go along. Sort of like a lot of first courses. Also pitchers of sangria with fruit in the bottom. Gets crowded after 8:00 or so. One year we went on to Second City which is fun also.

I guess we will spend a lot of time looking at Marshall Field windows, a Xmas bazaar on plaza by city offices with a Picasso sculpture. It's fun to take the bus on Michigan Ave. from Watertower down to Art Museum to see all the lights. I found out that the Fourth Presbyterian Church on North Michigan at Chestnut is having Xmas Eve candlelight services at 8:30 and 11. It is a beautiful church near the Drake Hotel. Also tea at the Drake is wonderful.

There are two new Fodors posts on pizza and what to do in Chicago that are interesting. I am an architecture buff so around every corner is an interesting building, just like AZ and the mountains. There is a place on Mich. Ave. near Art Museum that give arch. tours.

Have given up on Sierra Vista. Got a lot of realtors stuff but only to buy. I thought I would find something like northern Fla. where i rented a beach condo for $600/mo. Sierra Vista is pricey after such a long drive.

If you are near Homewood Suites (behind Nordstroms I think) drop me a message - Judith Alban. I will be there Dec. 21-25. Have lots of fun!
