Hey, St. Louis, MO!
I hear that you are responsible for the "Heavy Snow Warning" that's posted in the burbs on NYC!
North of the City is expecting between 6-10 inches tomorrow! Thanks alot ;) :D Anyone running out to stock up on milk and bread?!? Hurray! By the way, I guess that means there will be snow in Boston and New Hampshire for the weekend - yeah! :D |
Hey stw, we're getting it here in Indiana too. 6-7 inches so far. Left work at 3:00 and got home at 5:00. It's usually a 35 minute drive.
Didn't bother with the grocery store. I'll bake biscuits tomorrow while I'm stuck in my house. Scratch biscuits are way better than store bought bread. Which is why I don't make them all that often. Bake biscuits, eat biscuits. It's a vicious circle. :-) |
Indy, it should be bake biscuits, eat biscuits, drink wine. ((a)) ((b))
|
Indy, biscuits and butter sound good to me. I'm ready to bake some almond cookies :) But Budman's idea about adding some wine sounds good to me :D
Ah, those Missourian scoundrels! ;) Are there actually any Fodorites from Missouri? |
Doh! #-o I knew I was forgetting something Budman. :-)
Are you kidding stw? They're too busy still trying to figure out how to pronounce their state. Is it Missour-ee or Missour-uh? :-D I'm pretty sure annesherrod is from StL. |
Yeah, I think you're right about Annesherrod, Indy. Geez, I'd hate to blame one person for the snow, tho. Our weather guy is blaming the entire state - that's good enough for me :D
|
If all this cr*p melts I'll be in St Louis the weekend after this one. Visiting a friend from college, we'll ride the Link and dine at Chez Leon in the Central West End. I'll have foie gras and pretend I'm in Paris. :-)
|
Will you be drinking your way through the state?? LOL :D I loved your trip report ((b))
|
Thanks stw.
I won't be drinking through the state this time. Though I'm visiting the same friend I did the 20 arrondissements with in Paris. I've asked him about townships in St Louis. He's only come back with street corners in the Soulard District. Not quite the same I don't think. |
Hey, that's enough snow already, you guys!!!
I have my handy dandy ruler ready to measure, but it's cold out there, lol. It "looks" like a good 8/9 inches. Are the biscuits ready yet?!? :) |
We had it in metro KC before St. Louis. Watched it come from Colorado.
Got about 12 inches. Keith |
We, here in STL, only got about 3 inches. Since we haven't had any real snow in years (KC and CHicago would get it and it would miss us totally), it did cause some traffic tie-ups. But, I'm not sure you can really blame your snow on our snow.......
|
Only 3 inches, huh?!? Liz, our weatherman mentioned St. Louis specifically and showed pictures to boot :D But I am okay with spreading the blame to neighboring states, lol. ;)
|
Hey, I'm from MO...Springfield. Pretty cold here but only a little snow. Sorry about the rest of you!
But we do have children in Wichita, Boston, etc. So they likely got it. ozarksbill |
Oh, Ozarksbill, your family in Boston got the snow! I just got off the phone with my son (in Boston) and he said it looked like a blizzard outside :D
And by the way, I accept your apology 8-) |
stw the biscuits at lunch were excellent. I made them from scratch with the recipe my Mom always used from Betty Crocker wedding gift cookbook. Moist, flaked apart I had to have one with just real butter. Not that nasty trans-fatty fake crap people thought was healthy for decades. Yuck. Then one with honey. Then one with the peach jam my Mom taught me how to make. The jam's not a toughie like the biscuits. It's the Sure-Jell freezer jam recipe.
Oh well enough nostalgia. :-) We ended with about 8 inches of snow 30 miles south of Indianapolis. I was able to work from home today. Not my favorite thing to do but it is nice on a slick, snowy day. I cleaned my car off. I'm ready to head to the Chicago GTG tomorrow. Just a day trip but it'll be fun to meet some more Fodorites. |
St. Louis Offical snow fall was 2.4" for Dec. 8. What do weathermen know really? They are always wrong. I wonder if your weatherman was showing pictures of the 12 inches Keith said they got in KC. You know those east coasters...one place out here in flyover land is just like another.:D Just talked to my Mom in NYC, she says it's not too bad, but the suburbs are always worse.
So, STW, what was your final total? |
It looks like Keith wins prize with a foot of snow! :D
Liz, I think our final snow total is somewhere between 8 and 9 inches. Quite a lot of snow for early December. It's really windy now - brrrrr! I wouldn't mind if it stayed cold and the white stuff hung around for Christmas (as long as we don't get any more, of course). :D Indy, WOW, you are something else! I would love to have your biscuit recipe one of these days - and homemade jam too! Have a great GTG! :) |
stw the recipe is from "Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book Revised and Enlarged." Mom was married in '57 so it's from around that time. There's no date in the cookbook nor is there a copyright notice. Must have been a kinder, gentler, more sharing time.
The ingredients are simple. The "secret" is in the technique. The idea with pastry is to blend the shortening and flour together, not melt them together. Hands will melt the ingredients together if the dough is overworked resulting in a tough product. 2 cups sifted flour 3 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1/4 cup shortening (Crisco brand works best) 3/4 cup milk Mix the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Add the shortening and use a pastry knife to blend it together. It should look like a coarse meal when done. Add the milk and stir it into a ball with a fork. If the dough is sticky add more flour. If it's dry add a little more milk. Once a ball forms knead it lightly (no more than 10 times) on a lightly floured surface. (I use a big sheet of baking paper. Makes clean-up easy.) Pat the dough out to 1/2" thick. Cut into biscuits using a floured glass rim or biscuit cutter. Place without sides touching on an ungreased baking sheet or on baking paper on a baking sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 450 degrees. As always with baking make sure you pre-heat the oven! It's crucial. |
Indy, thanks for the recipe. I'm definitely going to make them over the holidays :D
