Hermosa Beach, Marina Del Rey, or ???

I am coming out there in late-July, not sure where to stay 100%, I was going to stay 5 nights in Hermosa Beach, but the motel only has 4 nights available, so I have to find somewhere else to stay my last night.

This got me to thinking just stay in HB 2 nights, and somewhere else for a combination of the remaining 3 nights, I'm leaning towards a Hotel in Marina Del Rey, anyone have an opinion of that ? Any better ideas ? I want to stay on the beach, not 1-2-3 blocks off of it.
I'm open to any logical suggestions between Malibu and Dana Point, 2 adults, 1 teenager, less than $180 a night 'or so'.

Stick with Hermosa Beach, your teen should love it. Marina del Rey is not beachfront. Are you flying in/out of LAX? Could spend your last night in Manhattan Beach in one of the hotels on Sepulveda Blvd, 3 miles from the airport.

Your teenager will love this area, lots of volleyball-on-the-beach type stuff going on...bicycling etc

Tracy, have you stayed at the Sea View Inn? We had friends stay there one summer weekend. They had a room one flight above store fronts, and directly on busy Highland Ave. Too noisy for them. Fredman wants to be right on the beach, too. However, the SV is the closest Manhattan has to offer to the sand.

There appears to be several places to stay on the beach in MDR, Foghorn Inn is one of them, I found it by www.visitthemarina.com or something like that.
We are going LAX both ways. Thought about Ontario as I used to live there, and thought it would be cheaper, but it wasn't.

I like Hermosa, Manhattan Beach far better than MdR area. I'd find a place at either rather than staying at MdR. Lots of volleyball and kids surfing there and cute little shops in both areas. A great Sketchers store in MB. Rent bikes and head north on the beach bike, walking, skate path.

Please don't tell me that your HB motel is the Sea Sprite. It's a truly awful place, the oceanfront location being the ONLY thing it has going for it. Check out the reviews on tripadvisor.com.

I would normally vote for Hermosa Beach. MDR is a marina and doesn't really have a proper beach. However, you should be aware that there is a major construction project going on at the Hermosa Beach Pier right now. There's a big construction equipment staging area right on the beach and lots of construction noise all day long. The views from the lower floors of the Beach House and the entire Sea Sprite motel are definitely impacted by this activity. It might be completed by late July, but I doubt it.

You could also try Huntington Beach. It is a fun place for teens. Like the Hermosa/Manhattan Beach area, it has a bike/skate path and lots of surfing and volleyball going on.

Your budget of $180 for a decent beachfront hotel in July might be a bit unrealistic.

Better than the cute Skechers store in downtown MB is the Skechers Outlet on 190th St. in Gardena, just off the freeway. Everything is buy-one, get the 2nd at 1/2 price.
