HELP:Birmingham, Alabama
Does anyone know how I may visit the Mercedes factory near Birmingham. I will be there for one day but I will not have a car. Is there transport to/from downtown to the factory. Also, is it worth visiting the factory? What else is there to see/do in Birmingham. Thanks.

The factory is not in Birmingham proper, but several miles west. I don't believe there is any transportation to the plant. You could contact them through their website:

There's lots to do around Birmingham..what are your interests, and in what part of Birmingham is your hotel?

I live near Birmingham, and I always have a car there, so I'm afraid I can be no help in the transit department. If you are downtown, the Musuem of Art is good. There is also the Southeastern Conference Hall of Fame. Outside Birmingham in the area of Mountain Brook is the zoo (fair) and Botanical Gardens (very nice). There is a tour at the Sloss (sp?) Furnaces, the old steel mill. South of Birmingham is the Oak Mountain State Park, which occasionally hosts some good music acts. Try:

The Mercedes Plant is in Vance, AL just outside of Tuscaloosa about an hour drive from B'ham. Don't know of any transportion other than Greyhound. Not sure if they stop in Vance. Tours are Monday-Fri 9-5 Sat. 10-5 closed Sundays and holidays. Admission is $4.00. Children must be 12 to tour plant. Call 1-888-2TourMB The plant is on I-59 at Exit 89 on Mercedes Drive. Hope this helps.
