Help with what to wear for Trip to Alaska

I've searched this board for help with what to wear in Alaska end of July early August. Most posts address June and July. Is the dress the same for end of July early August?

John Jul 16th, 2001 09:07 AM

Yes.

Suzie Jul 16th, 2001 09:21 AM

John, you care to elaborate?

James Jul 16th, 2001 09:34 AM

Suzie check the post I just brought to the top for you WHAT TO PACK FOR ALASKA

Suzie Jul 16th, 2001 09:49 AM

I'll admit, I'm totally clueless about the summer weather in Alaska. It will feel odd packing coats and sweaters while I'm sweating!

Suzie, I'm sorry for what you may have taken as a flip answer. As James mentioned, there's already a thread on this subject with several answers, and there's as much difference between July and early August in Alaska as there is anywhere else, like your home town. That is, essentially none. From one day to the next, there may be considerable change, just like in Chicago or Boston or Seattle, but there's no switch that flips on August 1st or 10th.

Alaska is around 3000 miles wide, Ketchikan to Attu, and around 1000 miles tall, Ketchikan to Barrow. There are at least six different climate regions where August conditions can (not will, can) be quite different from one another, e.g., cloudy and cool in SE Alaska, warm and sunny and dusty in the interior, wet and windy on Kodiak or the Aleutians, cold in the Arctic, partly cloudy in S. Central, and so on, then different the next day. Fishing on a stream near Denali Park will require bug spray and light weight clothes; riding on a cruise liner in SE will require something dressy to wear to the captain's ball; watching glaciers or whales in Prince William Sound will require a sweater and maybe a rain-resistant top. Bring a swimsuit for the pool at the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage.

If you tell us something about your itinerary and mode of travel (RV? Float plane?) we can give more detailed suggestions.

Car trip to Alaska. Stop in Denali. Day Cruise to see glaciers.

I appreciate your response. Actually where I live the weather is significantly warmer by the end of July early August as opposed to one month earlier but that's the mountains for you. Thought maybe Alaska might fluctuate similarly.
