It's late here, and the Mets just tied the Giants in the 7th inning - so I'm going to go to bed & hope the Giants can recover.
I'll try to provide some suggestions tomorrow.
Re-affirmn - you've never visited Carmel/Monterey/Big Sur/San Simeon ???
Geeze - that's where I would spend gobs of time.
Provide more details - when do you arrive, what are your commitments, when do you leave ???

Stu - this post confused me. I'm thinking of arriving late morning SFO on Wed 9/9, staying three nights. I want to see the King Tut exhibit and things I didn't get to on last trips. Sat & Sun 9/12 & 13 in Palo Alto. Undecided yet if I would leave PA late on the 13th or stay the second night. Then I would like to see Carmel, Big Sur, San Simeon, Pt Lobos, HMB, etc. I have never visited any of these places before. We would depart SFO probably Sat 9/19 giving us five nights before departure. The only commitment is the time in Palo Alto. Any suggestions would be so gratefully appreciated!

Sept is a great time to visit the Carmel/Big Sur area. We'll probably visit it then too.
I would do the same thing keb is doing. Drive from SF to Cambria/San Simeon & stay there 1 night, visiting Hearst Castle. Then meander up the coast (sun behind you in Sept), visit all the pfeiffer stuff, and stay 1 night in Big Sur. Consider staying at the funky Deetjens

Then up to Carmel & stay there for 2-3 nights.

Last night in Half Moon Bay if you have an early departure ( 1 less night in Carmel). Traffic from carmel to SFO will be light on a Sat.
Also consider staying in a B&B in a "neighborhood" in SF to give yourself a new SF experience. As you probably know, I like the Noe Valley

If you want to stay at one of these B&Bs, let me know - some are in better locations than others.
