Help with S. Dakota Itinerary
I need help. I've never been to SD. Never even been further west than TN. I don't know how to plan our itinerary.
We are flying into Sioux Falls (much cheaper than flying into RC) on Sat. July 29. We are leaving out of SF on Friday, Aug. 4. I know about the bike rally in Sturgis. I didn't know when the reservations were made. Anyway, we have reservations in Custer for Sunday, Monday & Tuesday nights. I know we need to get out of that area on Wed. when we check out.
My question, where should we stay on Sat. night? Then where to go when we check out of Custer? I guess we need go to back toward SF since we'll have to be there by Fri. morning. Please help us.
Thanks, Lisa

When we traveled to SD, we stayed in Custer(incredible state park)..There is alot to do in Custer however Mount Rushmore is pretty awesome. We also went to Hot Springs, SD. and went swimming at Evans Plunge-a natural hot spring indoor/outdoor swimming pool, The Mammoth Site museum ,Wind/Jewel Caves. We stayed in Hot Springs for two nights at a hotel similiar to Hampton Inn and checked out the sights if that helps.. Enjoy.

Wall might be a good place to stay; you can see Wall Drug and the Badlands are nearby and you can head farther west the next day. I would recommend driving on the grasslands part of the Badlands to see a buffalo!! Have fun! Try a buffalo burger!

We loved Spearfish, SD, too. Black Hills National Forest is lovely, and a nice place for a picnic or top dine at the lodge in the park, outside of Spearfish, near a marked site where some of "Dances With Wolves" was filmed.
A lovely B&B (if you like B&B's) is "Yesterday's Inn" in Spearfish. (See their web site.) Beds were very nice and breakfast was beyond words!
We found we could make fabulous time on the interstates. 75 mph speed limits help!
Enjoy.
