help with questions concerning HBR and lodging in poipu!!
My parent's 40th wedding anniversary and planning a trip to Kauai for them. This trip is being planned for May-very spur of the moment. I really think they would enjoy HBR, as it is very tropical. My question is what is the difference in the "suite w/Kitchenette and the 1 bedroom units? Besides more space is the quality better in a 1 bedroom? I know it rains there but in May there should be some sunny times? I think that they should spend some time on the south shore. Looking for a condo type unit with a view for about 5 days any ideas?
Thanks for any input. Trying to make this a nice trip even though last minute event!

James,
Get your hands on a book from Wizard Publishing called Kauai Revealed. It is an excellent resource! You can usually find it at Borders or Barnes and Noble. Go to their web site at :http://www.wizardpub.com and access the Kauai info. You can link to aerial shots of accomodations and also a review. I have been to the north shore in May and had very little rain. What do you parents like to do? Is oceanview important to them? As for the suite 2/kitchennete at HBR - I have stayed in one and found it very nice. I've heard that the hotel rooms are the most heavily used and the least likely to be updated and in good condition. Good luck!
Well I have to agree with shearl re wizardpub books as well as regarding the hotel rooms, see my comments in Rant n'Rave. Moral of that story is do your homework ahead of time !
HBR is in a beautiful setting, well kept grounds, lovely flowers, etc. You can't park close to your unit for the most part which might affect some folks, tho golf cart shuttle available. Quite a few local (within a few miles) restaurants. Condo units (and houses) within Princeville Resort area are also available to rent e.g. http://www.balihai.com/Princeville.htm Google for other local realtors, some of whom handle rentals, also try www.vacationspot.com, www.vrbo.com

Sorta depends on what they like to do, too.

Good luck, I hope my kids do the same for us in eleven years !!
p.

Thanks for the replies regarding the HBR! I am still not sure about going for the one bedroom or the suite. If I understand right the suite with a kitchenette is just a hotel room with a little efficiency area-is this correct? I guess what I am saying is that if the suite rooms are over used and shabby I am happy to pay a bit more for the one bedrooms. The TA said the one bedroom included breakfast and that would be nice. My parents are active, would probably do quite a bit of exploring and sight seeing. I think they would enjoy strolling the grounds. Is the Bali Hai restaurant impressive? Does it have a great view? Any imput is great!
Oh, still looking into something on the south shore for about 5 nights. I would welcome any suggestions. Probably oceanfront as they will be a ways from ocean at HBR.
Thanks

We stayed in Poipu right on the ocean in a place called Whalers Cove. We rented it through Suite Paradise. It was quite nice. Building 1 is right on the ocean. Building 2 has the pool between it and the ocean. We asked for a nd received Building 1. The grounds were lovely as was the condo. Very large lanai.

James May is the end of the rainy season. I love Kauai and visit frequently. I don't think I would risk the rain in May if I were sending my parents.

You can park near your units where I was, mountainview. I had a studio with a kitchenette and it was larger than most hotel rooms. I would not find the need for a 1 bedroom. A lot of people go to Poipu in the off rainy months I would send your parents to Maui. Small size island like Kauai with activity and sunnier skys. Poipu maybe if they are sun worshipers who don't care about rolling green landscape. IMHO.

Bali Hi restaurant views are impressive but I have seen the food quality decline in the past 3 years. Studios are large with a separate walk in powder room than bath and shower area.

I would head down to Pville for the seafood buffet on Friday night make reservations a head of time and get that sunset veiw.

Hi there, here's my opinion on suite w/kitchenette vs 1 bedroom...my husband & I are probably in your parent's age range and we prefer the 1 bedroom because he gets up WAY EARLIER than I do. If this is the case with your parents...one can sleep in and the other doesn't have to worry about disturbing the sleeping spouse. There is much more privacy, etc in the one bedroom.
