Help with New York "hot spots"
 

I will be in New York in Oct. I have been many times, and this is my annual trip in the fall. Some things I have done and really enjoyed...Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Gourmet Food tour in Grammercy/Flatiron, Walking tour near NYU, walked across Brooklyn Bridge. I used to eat at SoHo Kitchen and Bar all the time, now it is closed. Can you recommend a few "off teh beaten path" things to do and a restaurant/bar similar to SoHo Kitchen? I like other touristy things too like Ellis Island.

Also, I have not spent much time in Brooklyn at all. Are there any good tours to take in Brooklyn or another burrough?

Hmm trying to think....since I live in Brooklyn and work in midtown manhattan...

I don't know what Soho Kitchen was like as I was never there, but there are plenty of hip bar/restaurants to check out. You can check www.villagevoice.com which is the hip urban weekly paper here in NYC.

For food, I would highly recommend Brisas Del Caribe on the corner of Broadway and Broome, which if you're into authentic spanish food, this one has it! It's a small place that's cheap, but the food is to die for! Brought some for my boss and he said it reminded him of being back in Puerto Rico!

You might want to check into the Transit Museum if that interests you. It's not one of the popular ones, and you can do it in under 2 hours.

For Brooklyn, the best areas to check are Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill & Williamsburg. If you're feeling adventurous, you can check out a tour of the Brooklyn Brewery, which has a bohemian atmosphere to it during their open houses on Fridays and Saturdays from 6-10pm. You can get a pint of beer for $3 and they sometimes have art showings and live music.

Visit Arthur Avenue in the Bronx for truly authentic Italian food etc etc. It's a great way to spend a day.
