With kids, how about York Beach. Your choice if you can get availability in a hotel with pool across from the beach (The Anchorage) or anyplace within walking distance. Portland's Old Port Area is fun shopping but I don't think the kids will enjoy it. I think two days of beach time might be a good idea. It's one of Maine's best family beaches.
