Help With Mid West Itinerary
Hi
Having received useful information with my OP, we have now created an itinerary to include 3 locations:
This itinerary is for 2 adults during August 2007:
Nashville TN – 7 nights
Savannah GA – 7 nights
Although 7 nights may seem a long time in each location, we believe there will be sufficient places of interest to keep us occupied for 7 days.
We are stuck with our 3rd location, I have looked at SC, but to be honest, I don’t seem to get a feel for it.
Anyone have any suggestions for our 3rd location.
We will have a car for the 3 weeks; so driving is not a problem, regardless of the distance.
Thanks in advance
Paul

I know you strongly recommend visiting the National Parks.
I have discussed this with my partner, and unfortunately this kind of itinerary does not seem appealing.
Having said that, I do appreciate your advice.

You might want to repost this with a heading of "southeastern itinerary," since this is more the part of the country where you're heading now! When you say you've rejected SC, did you mean you looked at Charleston? That's certainly a wonderful town to visit.

I'm with skatedancer on reposting with southeastern in the title. I live in the Midwest so opened this thinking I might be able to help. Indicates to me that this title will draw the "wrong" people for your purposes. There are a lot of Fodorites who know a lot about the southeast. But it's questionable that they'd even open this with it's current title.

Probably too long for either of those places, for the SE, where would you be flying into or what are your options ? If you fly into Charlotte you have the Mts. on one side & the Coast on the other. Charleston should certainly be considered. I guess if you aren't into parks & such, what are you seeking ? You'll have easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway & wineries in either NC or Va. Fly into CLT head to Savannah, up to Charleston, spend some time on the Beach for a week, check out Wilmington, NC. Circle north to Charlottesville (& Va. Wineries) & meander down the Parkway to Asheville.

I know you want to stay in Holiday Inn properties.
Perhaps you can find inspiration by going to the Holiday Inn web site and clicking "Find Hotel." On the page which appears, enter a city of interest ("Charleston SC" for instance) and then ask to see the hotels within 100 miles of Charleston.
You might do the same with "Savannah."

Without knowing which airport you are using, I'll still suggest the Asheville area or the NC mountains. If you want Holiday Inns, the Holiday Inn Express in Boone, NC is very nice and that would be a great base for day trips.
