Help with Michigan west coast
 

We have traveled the east coast of Michigan all the way to Mackinac Island and now have a week to travel up the west coast. We will be in Dearborn Mi to visit the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. We then want to head north on 25. Where are places of interest to stay? We love water, marina's, history, and scenic views. Would there be a car ferry from Lake St Clair to Port Huron? Which ports should we visit? Any hotels or B&B's on the water? Any and all help appreciated.

Sorry, but there is no car ferry along that route.

At Alpena, you might consider the Middle Island Light Station Tour which includes a short boat ride, nature walk, viewing of restoration efforts and photo opportunities.

When are you making your trip? It may change some of the advise you receive.

Personally, while I could spend over a week going up the west coast, I think 3 days would be plenty for the drive you are talking about (not including the return). Obviously our tastes are different.

You helped me when I was making my plans for the western side of Michigan! We are taking this trip the first week in July. We would like to not make reservations anywhere but just stop when we want or (maybe just drive until Mackinac Island). However, July 4th concerns me. Don't want to not be able to find a room. Would Alpena be a good place to stay? Continue to Mackinac?

Not having reservations during 4th of July week is very dangerous in Michigan, especially the further north you get.

There are many lighthouses along the coast. I'm sure Port Huron has one, but can't remember the name.

Bay City has a great planetarium near the river. From Bay City you can also take a ride on a sailing ship[Appledore] into Saginaw Bay.

Absolutely make sure you have hotel/motel reservations prior to going to this area as they can get very busy in the summer.

Sorry CD, but I don't know that coast well enough to give more advice. I was down that way 2-3 times a year growing up, but only the one time in recent years.

That side of the state has its own beauty and is much less developed. It is more like visiting northern Michigan 30 years ago.

If you go without reservations, start looking for a place to stay very early in the day.
