springiwell - your latest revised plan makes good sense - a nice blend of driving vs. flying. Go for it!

I like your new plan, too. What a great trip!

I really like your trip plan. For a long journey like the one yours' I would prefer renting a car instead of RV, as we have to cover a long distance in short time, then it would better to have a car rather than RV as they might be slow in covering distance and also they charge per mileage will cost a lot of money. Motels will be good place to stay on, avoid snowy paths, use Google maps. Make the most of it especially Las Vegas.

"Drive San Fran to Las Vegas" is not a good idea.

I think I would drive LA to San Francisco, Fly San Fran to Hawaii, and then fly Hawaii to Las Vegas.

Sorry Clarkgriswold we've already booked but we are doing the San Fran to Vegas by Greyhound, leaves at 8am gets there at 8pm... So not too bad but i realise now its booked we would have been better to do it the other way round... oh well!!!

So... now we are all booked can people advise on must see's along the way? Im very into movies so any must see locations would be great and anything you think would be of interest would be a massive help...

Thanks for your time so far guys, this has been so helpful.

Regarding the Greyhound trip from SF to Las Vegas - You would be much more comfortable taking the Amtrak San Joaquin #712 from Emeryville at 7:40AM to Bakersfield @ 1:40PM with Amtrak bus #3612 arriving in Las Vegas at the Greyhound bus station at 6:50PM.
With Greyhound, there is one bathroom on the bus and you have to eat wherever they stop.
With the San Joaquin, you can eat on the train while you are moving toward your destination.
The bathrooms on the San Joaquin trains are bigger and nicer than any I've ever seen on a bus.

When planning, use Google maps, their "directions" feature, to see the milage and the time it takes to get from A to B ... lots of people from the UK don't realize the immense distances and times involved.

Example:
The driving distance via the most direct route
Miami to Los Angeles: 2,730 miles
London UK to Istanbul: 1,990 miles
London UK to Moscow: 1,783 miles
