The comment is based on the observation that the big money moved into South Beach a few years back and started converting the chain hotels into their deluxe name brands and private vacation timeshares... the Royal Palm just down the beach, started as a Holiday Inn... then an Intercontinental.. then a timeshare... as a Doubletree, the Surfcomber is a steal for rates, its on the beach and is slipped into a swanky location... its got a great pool without the attitude you would find at Delano or Loews in the same neighborhood...

Nope, the Royal Palm was a Crown Plaza for years. The Holiday Inn was on 21st and Collins and was torn down a couple of years ago and is now a W Hotel.
The Doubletree hasn't been a steal for years. Their rates are well over $300 per night in peak season.

My good friend was the Director of Sales and Marketing for the Crown Plaza Royal Palm during the late 1990s and the early 2000s. When they sold the property, he was promoted to General Manager of the Crown Plaza Miami Airport.
Aside from the fact that I was in the hotel business for years and followed Miami trends, we used to stay at the hotel all the time.
It doesn't have anything to do with being right but correct information.
Both the Holiday Inn and Crown Plaza are under the Ichotels umbrella.
