Help Walking Across Brooklyn Bridge
 

We would like to walk across the bridge but only one way. Should we take a cab to Grimaldi's pizzeria and walk back to South Street Seaport? Or, should we walk over the brige to Grimaldi's and then take a cab back to the Seaport?

I guess my question is, which is the further walk? Thank you.

I'd walk off the pizza.

I don't know which distance is longer, but most people recommend taking the subway to Brooklyn and walking back, only because you're looking at the Manhattan skyline if you do it in that direction. We did it the other way (walked to Grimaldi's etc and subway'd back) and it was still really fun (we just turned around to look at the skyline). The lines are shorter at Grimaldi's if you go off-hours (like 3:00) -- by the way, I don't think it's worth going to Brooklyn for, the pizza is very good, but there's very good pizza in Manhattan. Don't forget the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and Jacques Torres chocolates, both within a stone's throw from Grimaldi's. The hot chocolate at Jacques Torres is to die for (although it may be too hot to try in summer). All in all, I'm definitely glad I did it once (after all, I live in San Francisco and have never walked across the Golden Gate Bridge).

Ok, thanks for the replies. We will walk off the pizza and whatever else we munch on (ice cream, chocolate).

We hope to arrive at Grimaldi's right when they open at 11:30am to avoid long lines.

I have walked it twice and both times frrom Brooklyn.

For me the idea was to face the NY skyline rather than Brooklyn.

I also suggest walking around the area right near the Promenade to wee the old brownstones and then on the Promendae over to Grimaldi's and then the Bridge back.

I think I will print out the link.
It seems confusing, probably once we get there it will be easier to understand.

We crossed a bridge a few times.
I would strongly recommend walking from Brooklyn - because you're looking at the Manhattan skyline and the view is changing with almost every step. It is better, than to make a frequent stops and look back to Manhattan.
Also there are very interesting information about bridge itself in the mid section of the bridge

I think it's much more enjoyable to walk the bridge at sunset--the skyline was an impressive sight. We walked both ways--it didn't seem that far--or walk halfway and then back.

We took the subway to Brooklyn, ate lunch at Grimaldi's (well worth waiting for) and then walked back to Manhattan over the Brooklyn Bridge. This worked out well as we walked our lunch off , as others mentioned, and also for the fact that we could walk at our leisure instead of trying to hurry to get to the pizza! Grimaldi's is much smaller that I would have pictured but the atmosphere is very casual, and energetic. Food was really good. I still think of it and it has been almost 2 years since I last had it. Enjoy it.

I say walk back to Manhattan. WHile you can take the subway to Brooklyn, it's also rather fun to take the little boats across from Seaport. You'll arrive about two blocks max from Grimaldi's.

Another option is the water taxi to Fulton Landing near Grimaldi's. The best part of that is that the boat stop is right at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory!!! I'm a little unsure, however, of what the water taxi schedule is these days.

If you're a music fan, the best part under the BB on the Brklyn side is not the pizza or ice cream, but Bargemusic, a little gem of a floating recital hall.

Do people do the bridge walk at night?

Yes, if it's not too cold or windy.
