Help us choose a Broadway play please....
 

We will be in NYC in fall on a Monday night and want to see a play. We like adult comedy or musicals, something uplifting, nothing sad or too much drama.

Most recently we have seen South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, 39 Steps. We loved all 3. We're considering Wicked but thought maybe it's more for kids ?? Would appreciaqte any suggestions. Thank you.

The only thing I can help with -- Wicked is definitely not just for kids -- it's a very sophisticated show with a great story, sets, costumes...in fact, the music is my personal LEAST favorite part of the show!

I sat next to a little kid the last time I saw it. Wicked is not for the little ones. It's not the Wizard of Oz.

They would love Lion King! We took my kids to see it when they when they were 10 and 6 and they loved it. We also saw Beauty and the Beast on the same trip. Wicked is amazing, but it might be a little too much. I am also a huge fan of Wicked! :-)

Thanks for quick replies. Also considered Jersey Boys but my husband was never big Frankie Valle fan so is not too thrilled about it.

Any other good comedies, doesn't have to be a musical??

Your pickings are going to be slim. You may have to look for off-Broadway options.

Billy Elliot is completely fantastic, and is expected to sweep the Tonys. The dancing!! and story are terrific. The cast is phenomenal. I absolutely loved it - one of my favorite shows ever.

In the Heights is terrific and so much fun. Great energy and music, heartwarming story. You might be able to snag tickets at a discount if you wait.

For a play, the original cast of God of Carnage just announced they are extending their run -- James Gandolfini, Jeff Daniels, Marcia Gay Harden, and Hope Davis are all returning to the show on Sept. 8 (after taking the month of August off.) I haven't seen it, but I've heard nothing but wonderful things about it, and it would be on my "must see" list if I were going to New York soon.

Wicked is wonderful, and though children certainly enjoy it, I think it has a much stronger appeal for adults. The story is clever and definitely geared towards adults.

For Billy Elliot, God of Carnage, and Wicked, I would get tickets sooner rather than later, as they're all popular and come close to selling out week after week.

Another vote for either Wicked or Billy Elliot. Just saw West Side Story and I'd probably pass on recommending it...

Oh! I forgot one - the current revival of Hair is great and a lot of fun.

Wicked, Phantom, Mamma Mia and In The Heights.

I am going to try to see In The Heights when it comes to Southern California.

West Side Story was wonderful. If you love the music, you will love the production.
Bye Bye Birdie is opening mid Oct w/ previews before that.
Avenue Q is also very good - very adult, very clever. There are discount tix available.

Wicked, Billy Elliot and agree that Hair is great fun - as long as you're not of a very conservative leaning.

If you haven't seen it yet, Wicked is a must. Definitely not a kids show. Also agree with Avenue Q.

On a side note, what's up with all these revivals?

Wicked is FANTASTIC. It explores the true nature of evil and the importance of seeing the full story. Excellent show!

My husband and I saw Jersey Boys and LOVED it. I'm surprised that no one has suggested the Norman Conquests. That's definately a comedy and has gotten rave reviews (I haven't seen it yet though).
