Help! Stuck in Detroit
 

I'm stuck in Detroit over the weekend for business. I have a rental car--and need some suggestions on where I can go to see something besides beautiful downtown Detroit!

What are your interests? This native can get you around. There are plenty of FUN things to do.<BR><BR>Have you checked out Greektown? Also, Jerry Seingfield is at the Fox Theatre downtown - was sold out - but perhaps (more than likely) some extra tickets at call waiting. Detroit Symphony (very good!) is starting at 8:30 tonight, featuring Shostakovich's Tenth Symphony.<BR><BR>Also, there is Windsor, the Casinos (my favorite is The Motor City), and some great movie theatres. For nightClubs, the best is Space @ 415 E. Congress (Downtown); Second City (also downtown) is a great comedy club; Sweet Georgia Brown, 1045 Brush was just named best new restaurant. Too bad the Lions are away this weekend. The new Ford Field is a MUST see. The Red Wings are in town tomorrow night down on the riverfront. They play the Dallas Stars at 7:30pm. Enjoy the town!

How about Greenfield village and the Henry Ford Museum in nearby Dearborn?<BR><BR>Or if you want to go a little further there's Frankenmuth. Although it's a bit touristy (OK, a lot touristy) you can visit the world's largest Christmas store, Bronner's, have dinner at one of the family style restaurants, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions. I went to Greektown, Windsor &amp; Ann Arbor. I was thinking of driving to Saugatuck today--is this a wise choice?

If I'm not too late, I would strongly recomend Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn.<BR><BR>If you like technology, visit the museum, which is on the same scale as the Smithstonian. The village consists of building that Henry Ford brought there from around the world. Some are 4-500 years old. It includes the Wright Brothers home &amp; shop and Edison's entire Menlo Park complex. The Fall through Christmas is a great time of year to visit. Be sure and vist the bake shop.<BR><BR>If I am in Detroit for more than a few hours, I always visit either American Coney Island or Lafayette Coney Island, downtown. These shops are side by side, open 24 hours (if I remember right), and have been open since 1917. They were opened by brothers and one is still in the family.<BR><BR>The conies are great and the fixtures are cool, some of them going back 60 or more years.<BR><BR> Keith<BR><BR>PS: How long was the wait to get through customs coming back? When I was a Sault Ste Marie in July it was taking hours.<BR>

It only took about 10 minutes on the way back. <BR><BR>I went to American Coney Island--it was worth the experience--but I must say I prefer Chicago dogs.<BR><BR>Any idea where to get some Michigan gifts? Someone suggested Michigania--said they have a store in a nearby mall--but I can only find info on the store in Lansing.

D, just remember that Detroit is the Motor City. Always has been. Always will be. Let that be your guide.

Consider yourself lucky; I was stuck in Detroit for 31 years.
