Help:) Reno,Tahoe,San Fran 6 Day Trip

Hi Everyone,

Just booked this trip on the fly to see some new places...I'm a 32, single bachelor who has seen 45 states going with my travel buddy. So no kids or family type trip...I enjoy craft beer, good bars, taverns and pubs, gambling, hiking, beaches, scenery, golfing, history, boating, sports, good nightlife, great food so you have an idea of my interest and where to direct me.. Plan is land in Reno and fly back home from San Francisco.. This is a 7 night, 6 day trip ( Breakdown right now is 3 Nights & 2 Days Reno / 1 day & Night Tahoe/ 3 days & nights San Fran).

Anyways, I will have a rental car....I am landing in Reno late around 11PM, So plan is to get hotel shuttle and check in and probably start drinking and Gambling lol....Most likely staying at Circus Circus or Harrahs due to the price....Is everything in the area safe for walking at night? Also, my plan is to stay in Reno for that night when I land which would a be a Thursday night and then the whole next day there..So that puts me at 2 nights and one entire day to see and check out Reno in the daylight...Should I stay that whole extra 2nd day & 3rd night (Saturday) which I put on my Vaca Breakdown or move on south? Im 50/50 on it right now and only booked hotel first 2 nights in case I want to move on and not stay there for a third night..Also, what should I check out besides casinos? Any good bars, lounges to socialize with others in the area? (Single women places would help , not the ones working for $$$ lol )

I've been hearing about Virginia City to stop in & that looks really interesting and reminds me of when I went to Jerome,AZ....I love the old mining ghost towns...So is that a must on the way to Tahoe? Is Carson City worth stopping in? or should I just head to South Tahoe? I made one whole day & night to see Tahoe alone so if I leave Reno early that day it gives me extra time to explore more things and areas and possible extra day in San Fran area..What are the best parts and stops I should make down Lake Tahoe? I would love to hang out on the beaches and relax also..Most likely if I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere and have some nightlife I should stay by Stateline,NV/South Tahoe correct?

Sorry this is messy & real long..Anyone who can help with San Fran leg of trip also would be great..So far ATT Park, Alcatraz ( But I didnt realize you have to book so far in advance and all sold out), Golden Gate Bridge,Pier 39,Etc...I may have an extra day so Napa,San Jose? Anyone who get through this and help a guy out I truly appreciate the recommendations and input. Thank you so much.

When is this trip? I would spend more time in Tahoe. So beautiful and you would have more going on during the weekend, rather than a weekday. Reno is gritty in the old downtown area. Virginia City is fun for an afternoon.

Harrah's 100% over Circus Circus. Yes it is safe to walk in that central casino-centric area at night.

I would only stay 2 nights in Reno - then 2 nights at Tahoe. There is a lot to see and do at Tahoe and if you spend any time in the casinos you'd need most of another day to see some of it. You could leave Reno by mid-morning - head over to Virginia City then take Hwy 50 to south shore.

Instead of VA City though (which is fun) maybe consider taking I-80 to Truckee. Neat town on the Truckee River with some good bars and places to eat. This would put you at north shore. There isn't as much 'action' at north shore but you could

With your interests -- I probably wouldn't bother w/ Carson City.

My choice would be I-80 > Truckee > Hwy 267 to north shore > then drive around the east side of the Lake (AMAZING scenery) to south shore to stay. Be sure to stop at Sand Harbor just outside Incline Village

Then Hwy 50 to I-80 in Sacramento and on to SF.

(OR -- you could do Reno, VA City, Hwy 50 to southshore to stay - then when leaving drive north around the east side of the Lake and catch I-80 all the way to SF)

There are some tour companies that can get you on to Alcatraz on multi site tours so if it is important, you can still see it . . . at a cost.

You could go to Sonoma for sure but I'd play it by ear and see how much you are enjoying SF.

Random thoughts

Reno - I'd spend the night and move on the next morning. You'll get the idea, gamble some, drink some, maybe hear some live music, and move on.

If you like Jerome, you'll like Virginia City.

Carson City - not even worth driving through, let alone stopping.

Best beach in Lake Tahoe - Sand Harbor on the east side. Once the parking lot is full, it's full, and you can't walk in (you can take a shuttle from Incline Village, or boat/kayak in, I think). Best idea - go later in the day when people start leaving, around 3 p.m.

Take the time to drive around the lake's perimeter, which is spectacular in so many places.

Yes, if you want gambling and nightlife, you should stay in South Lake Tahoe/Stateline. We were there last week, and although I much prefer North Lake Tahoe, we were pleasantly surprised by how much SLT has been "upgraded" (redevelopment in the area of the casino hotels).

San Francisco - Stu Dudley has "published" a list of things to do that's a mile long. He posted it yesterday on some thread. See if you can find it.

Napa - very pretty area, and fine if you're into wine. Personally, I'd stay in San Francisco for the extra days.

San Jose - I wouldn't leave San Francisco for San Jose. Fine if you're in the area.

I hadn't seen janis' post before I posted. Agree about Truckee. Have lunch at the Squeeze In.
