You can go back and forth discoursing about the merits of Sonoma (cute Victorian architecture and a town square) - Healsburg (also a great locale if you want to float down the Russian River) - Calistoga for mud baths and Chateau Montelena - and on and on.

Would say there are wineries easy to get to in Sonoma though - such as Gundlach Bundschu -and others in the nearby Carneros area. http://www.gunbun.com/ And Gloria Ferrer is not far.http://www.gloriaferrer.com/

As for getting to the Napa area, whether from SFO or Oakland, - it may take a little work - but hey - once you get there - kick back and toast your good fortune.

BTW - the greater Napa Valley is not really that big - and we used to ride bicycles all around there. We also liked the BV winery for a great cellar, Heitz was the new darling way back when, one even has a Gondola (forget the name) - but there are limitless choices.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Easy traveler - actually we were considering Silverado but I am not a golfer and really wanted to have more room to relax on this trip (as opposed to a hotel room or 1 bdrm. suite) while husband played 18.

Any restaurants suggestions - particularly ones with fab outdoor dining - would be appreciated.
