Totally different in SF. These are hotels that are motor friendly - hence the name. They were mostly built in the 50s, so many have not-so-great street appeal, but several have been spruced up quite a bit. I'm pretty sure there are many with doors that are not easily accessible by a walker-by. Again - this is a very safe area. Some of the most exclusive homes in SF are just 1-3 blocks away from Union St.

A dingy/smelly/you-know-what type of place would not survive long in an area that has 2-3 million dollar homes and $2,500-3,000 a month studio apts in the immediate vacinity.

anyazie: have you ever used Priceline or Hotwire? If not, come back here and ask away.

For your purposes, i agree tht Union Square would be the best location.

At Union Square, You could get a 4* room for two people for under $100, taxes and fees included, on Priceline. That should take the bite out of the expense parking problem.

Once someone posted about a hotel several blocks up the hill from Union Square, reasonable rates and no parking fee. Wish i could remember the name of that hotel!

I agree with not staying in a motel type of place. Personally, the noise from the outside always penetrates and it REALLY bothers me. The motel type places on Lombard are getting a bit aged and Lombard is a very busy street. The neighborhood is safe.

Another option is the post that mentioned using Hotwire. On Hotwire, You don't get to know the name of the hotel until you've paid for it - and the prices are usually more than Priceline. But you don't have to go through the uncertainty of bidding.

The bad part with both Priceline and Hotwire is that you're stuck with having purchased a room for those dates, whether you use the room or not. So, it's best not to use these discount services until you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN of the dates.

If you do decide to use either Priceline or Hotwire, go for something that is 3* or above. Hotwire tends to rate their hotels 1/2* higher than Priceline, so a 3* on Hotwire is really a 2 1/2* on Priceline.

Don't stay out of town. The commute time is not worth the savings.

And would you please have that person who said that Thursdays is a hopping time for San Jose, have that person contact me? I live in the Greater San Jose area and it's deader than Burlingame - any night!
Stay in San Francisco - I know a few young people who live up there and they never lack for things to do.

Anyazie, no one here, especially Stu would recommend the kind of place you are referring to. I'm sorry I just don't understand why you are rejecting some very thoughtful suggestions. If you are concerned about the advice you are receiving just click on the poster's name and you will see that Stu and dm have a very long history of giving very good advice.

There are several of the "Lombard St" hotels that are actually 1 block off Lombard on Greenwich St. Also, I suspect that many of the hotels have double-pane windows - thus reducing noise.

Personally, I much prefer the neighborhood feel of Cow Hollow & the Marina to the downtown Union Sq area with the highrises, dept stores, etc. Others (perhaps a majority of non-locals) would prefer the Union Sq. area.

Of course, being true to tradition - I would never stay at Fisherman's Wharf.

Embarcadero is fine.

To add on to what Stu Dudley said about the Cow Hollow/ Lombard St. area,my DH an I enjoyed our stays at the Coventry Motor Inn 2 ish years ago. It's a 3 block walk to Union Street (not Union Square) with it's shops and dining. We paid just under $100.- a night (that included tax) with free parking. Ask for a room away from Lombard Street as it's noisy. Even though we enjoyed our stays there, I would only stay there if I had to have a car in the city, as I prefer staying in Union Square without a car and use public transit.
