Help! Oahu or Kauai in May?!?!
 

Hi Everyone:

My DH and I are going to the Big Island this Wednesday for Thanksgiving (and a wedding), but we are already looking forward to our 2nd wedding anniversary in May. I found what I think is a great deal on Hawaiian airlines for May--$298 per person plus tax for Oahu and $398 per person plus tax for Kauai. We will only have about a week so I'd like to stick with one island. What do you suggest?

On Kauai I'd like to stay at the Hyatt (I know, I know expensive) and on Oahu I'd probably like to stay at the Outrigger Waikiki, but Im open to suggestions.

Also, what do you think about those prices? The flight are from LAX.

If those prices are for round trip fares, then I'd say they are excellent.

I've stayed at the Hyatt on Kaua'i and it is a great hotel. Big...but great. The beach is very pretty, but not a great swimming beach. That's okay because Poipu is close by and the hotel has a wonderful, heated, saltwater lagoon for swimming that is fantastic for floating in.

I have not been to Oahu in many years, but I am aiming to get back there soon. There is a huge Oahu booster contingent here that absolutley loves it, so you will get lots of good advice if that is what you choose.

Hi, those are indeed great prices. We just got back from Kauai last month and paid $468 r/t from Los Angeles. Have not been to Oahu yet so cannot comment on that. We usually go in the fall, but went to Kauai one year in May and the weather was great (only had a bit of a brief shower one day, not even enough so you had to leave the pool).

Have a great trip to the BI, always want to go back. One of these days...

We did an Oahu/BI combo trip this past summer, and LOVED it!

We have been to Oahu, BI, and Maui, and loved them all. We have stayed at Outrigger Waikiki twice, and it's a fabulous hotel in a great location. This past summer, we stayed there for 8 nights and enjoyed lots of meals at Duke's and Hula Grill. We loved swimming at Waikiki and walking to all the shopping. We also did a lot of sightseeing over the entire island....we went to the North Shore a couple of days (GORGEOUS!), Aloha Swap Meet, Lanikai Beach, etc....It's a beautiful, diverse island.

I like Oahu particularly because I often travel solo and can easily get non-stop flights direct to Honolulu and get around with only public transportation, no rental car. I paid $327 in February, Seattle/Honolulu RT on Hawaiian Air.

Great airfare prices - lucky you! Oahu or Kauai depends on what you like. Kauai is more tropical, hawiian, slower pace and Oahu (I'm thinking Honolulu) is more shopping, more big buildings, more traffic, more crowded beaches. North shore Oahu is more tropical and slower than Waikiki. I've been to all the islands and only go back to Kauai as that is my most favorite. Lots to do without the "big city" environment and the Hyatt is fabulous. If you go to Kauai be sure to try and get to Hanalei and that side of the island for some great beaches and funky little old hawaiian towns.

klf214, go to alternative-hawaii.com, research all about Oahu and Kauai there. See what catches your fancy. I have been to both more than once, and if I could only go back to one, it would be Oahu. It has everything you can want in an island, and more!

Those airfares you're quoting sound very good to me.

Have you been to either Kauai or Oahu before?
These are generalizations, but...do you want more of a "laid back" vacation, or more energized with the option of great shopping, museums, historical sites (including Pearl Harbor, Iolani Palace ) etc. as well as gorgeous scenery and stunning beaches all around the island(Oahu). Wait--Kauai has the stunning scenery, mountains to the beach's edge. See what we all mean about deciding ? (-:
