Detroit weekend for TWO!!
I am planning a weekend in Detroit for myself and a very special someone..I live here in MIchigan but have never really explored Detroit.. What I am hoping for is a wonderful Hotel that is Centrally located so we can take in as much of the city as possible.. Also looking for restaurant recommendations ..Romance is definitley the key word here.. Anyone have Ideas for me??

Do you want the City of Detroit, or the metropolitan area of Detroit? Huge difference. City of Detroit doesn't have much in the way of romance. I go there several times a year and lived in the downtown area of Detroit for several years. All the action in the Detroit area is outside the city itself, with the exception of the casinos. The theatres are good but for the most part, people eat outside of the theatre district.
Opus One is still downtown. I'm not crazy about it but it is the top place if you are in the central Detroit city area.
Here are my ideas for a romantic weekend:
Dearborn Inn
The Townsend in Birmingham.
Birmingham is a great place for a romantic weekend. Great shopping, restaurants, a walking town, close to Somerset (enormous high end mall), walking the grounds of Cranbrook.

Opus One is still downtown. I'm not crazy about it but it is the top place if you are in the central Detroit city area.

I live in the burbs of Metro Detroit. I would suggest Birmingham as well. The Townsend is a wonderful hotel...very expensive.
A nice restaurant in downtown is the Fox Grill. It is quite good.
In Northville, Little Italy is really nice too...very romantic...ask for the closet when you make your reservations.
Farmington Hills...Tribute is excellent. I believe it is 5 star. The lark IS 5 star. very expensive.
Another really good place is in Grosse Pointe called d'Eduardos. They have a casual side and fancy side. i have been to both sides and the fancy is really nice, very quiet and romantic. we went there for our 1 year anniversary, and have been back many times.
Coach Insignia in Detroit is new and is supposed to be quite good. It is located on top of the Renaissance Center..it is revolving. It is fairly new. There is the Marriott in the Renaissance Center as well.

If you are talking about the City of Detroit, there are definitely many options for romance. The Athenium Hotel is pretty nice...get a room with an oversized jacuzzi in it. As for restaurants, my favorites for romance are The Whitney (extremely romantic gourmet restaurant), The Rattlesnake Club (excellent food and service), Coach Insignia (in the Ren Cen--amazing view), and Cuisine (romantic place right next to the Fisher Theatre). These are all very expensive restaurants, by the way. Also, I haven't been to Seldom Blues, but it's a jazz supper club also in the Ren Cen which I hear is very nice.
Outside of Detroit, I would recommend the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham which also has a wonderful restaurant called the Rugby Grille. I agree with those saying that Detroit proper isn't the most romantic city and concur that staying in Birmingham would be much more comfortable.
That being said, a few other very nice restaurants not mentioned in downtown Detroit are Small Plates (Tappas), Agave (Southwest), Atlas Grill (International) and Oslo (A very cool atypical place for Sushi).

We live in a suburb of Detroit and we frequent the city a lot. If you want to stay at a nice hotel downtown, I would reccommend The Athenium in Greektown. It is connected to the casino. For dinner, I would also suggest the DaEduardo Foxtown Grille. We really like it there. There really are not many dining/nightlife choices in the city. Across the street from Foxtown is Fifth Avenue. It is a nice place for a drink and has a good atmosphere.

Birmingham gets enough business, while it's a charming little town, I'm going to promote Detroit and here a couple of suggestions.
Accomodations:
Inn on Ferry Street - Registered mansions in Detroit that have been converted and refurbished into luxury accomodations

Activities:
Go to the DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts), spend some time just tooling around the gallery, there's a new exhibit in right now, Gerard ter Borch. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.
Take in a show at the Opera House or go see the DSO (Detroit Symphony Ochestra). If you're looking for some less expensive, try the Hilberry Theater which is one of the Wayne State University Theaters. I've been to a few productions here, it inexpensive and more intimate. But the Opera House is beautiful.
Restaurants:
Some of the other posters have listed some of my faves.
Small Plates - tapas. Intimate, excellent food, and moderately priced.
The Whitney - the ultimate in romance, but it's really pricey. So what I do to save some dollars, is have dinner at a less expensive restaurant like Small Plates, then go the Whitney to the upstairs bar and have champagne and dessert.
The Congress Lounge - good food, very chic and trendy atmosphere
If you do end up giving in and going to the Burbs....the best restaurant for romance and truly a 5 star dining experience is The Lark...bring your wallet.

Stroll Monroe Street and stop in at Astoria Bakery for the most decadent sweets in the midwest. Use the People Mover to get you from the Ren Center to Monroe Street.
Visit Windsor, Ontario. Great eats in their ethnic neighborhoods. While there, visit the Hiram Walker distillerary, and/or the Windsor Raceway.
