Help me quick Staying at Pochartrain Good idea or not?

Sending my parents on a needed vacation over the new year - money is tight but can go up to 200 a night - made reservations in the garden district at pochartrain Will I need a car or is cab and street car service enough?
Is this a decent hotel?

In which city might this hotel be located?

While this is a very nice place, they might be better served by being either in or closer to the French Quarter where most of what they will want to see is located. Try the Monteleone hotel on Rue Royal. Good location and a very nice hotel. If staying in the Freench Quarter a car isn't needed. Cabs from the Garden Distrct can be somewhat expensive.

This is NOT a very nice place. Maybe 50 years ago, but not now. It really needs a lot of work. The rooms are threadbare and the famous restaurant is now closed.

The Pontchartrain is a classic old hotel, Sinda, but as Abby says is in need of renovations. They have done some work on the hotel recently, so perhaps your folks should ask for a newly-renovated room.

The Caribbean Room restaurant has indeed been closed for several years but the casual Pontchartrain Cafe' is open. Tell your parents to get a piece of "Mile High Pie" as the hotel is known for it!

The vacation gift is very nice. Hope they enjoy the trip!

The Ponchartrain is NOT w/i walking distance of the Quarter and most things they would want to do. If they stay there, they certainly do not need a car, in fact, it would be a hindrance. That hotel is on St. Charles Ave which has the streetcars and cabs are not expensive. I have not stayed there in several years and it could have used a little imnprovement at that time, but the rooms are very large and I think had small refrigerators and coffee pots.
Be sure they understand not to deviate one block behind that hotel--BAD neighborhood. Stay on St. Charles if they are walking. I hope they enjoy the trip.
