Help me pick some Hawaiian music for my trip to Kaua`i.

I just recieved an IPOD mini and travel speakers as a gift!

I am going to bring it with me to Kaua`i (36 days!). I love listening to Hawaiian music while there, but I have very little here at home and feel inept when it comes to knowing what to buy.

-I have one IZ cd.
-I like Hapa, but am not sure which cds to buy.
-I like slack key guitar.
-I like the Hawaiian falsetto style of singing.
-I am a fairly adventurous when it comes to music.

Please help me select some Hawaiian music for my trip!

Thanks.

-Bill

Go to mele.com where you can listen to snippets of Hawaiian music and choose some things to order. HAPA's "Collection" is really great!

Check out anything by Keali'i Reichel.
Sounds like you're going about the same time we are. We leave 7/28. Harry

I bought a great cd by The Cazimero Brothers. It was nominated for a grammy. Sounds like they are playing for the king and queen!

Aaaalllohhhhhaaaa Bill!

I just finished burning some of my favs to take to Kauai in 9 DAYS!!!

Ok, here goes...

Portraits, Ernie Cruz Jr. - FABULOUS!!! Will make you want to dance!

Cross Current, Jake Shimabukuro - Instrumental... love this! Especially my signature song, "and here's to you Mrs. Robinson, Jesus loves you more than you will know, whoah whoaaah whoaaaah..."

Sunday Morning, Jake Shimabukuro - Instrumental... love this one, too! DH loves (and BLASTS) the Sunrise Song on Sunday mornings.

Kohala, Cool Breeze - Very mellow instrumental

Hapa - Original CD self-titled. Very talented - great music.

Pure Heart - Fun, fun... don't miss this original self-titled CD. Great Hawaii driving music.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, Facing Future and also, E ALA E - Hey it's IZ... what more needs to be said? ><

Masters Collection Vol 2, Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar - I listen to this almost daily at my computer.

Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, Pu'ana Hou me Ke aloha - Great classic Hawaiian music... love the waterfall songs.

Willie K, The Uncle in Me - not too classic Hawaii, but lots of fun.

Have fun... I am dreaming Hanalei...

Thanks all. I ordered some stuff from mele.com and amazon. I used the Grammy nominees as a starting place and went from there. Brothers Cazimero, Hapa, Ho'okena, Slack Key Guitar Volume 2, Keali`i Reichel and Ernie Cruz Jr. are going to sound great sitting on the deck watching the boats bob up and down on Hanalei Bay!
Any other suggestions?

Well..not sure what your generation and may not be your cup of tea, but if you want to mix it up... as most Hawaii fans love the movie 50 first dates, I love the soundtrack too..it's all 80's & 90's songs redone in reggae style, but everytime I hear it I picture those scenes from the movie.

When we went to Kauai, we came across a local radio station playing Jawaiian music...boy did I love that! It really fit the secluded, tropical feel of Kauai. We got some Hawaiian Island Roots cd's at the aloha stadium swapmeet, I've seen them online too. Guess these would fit in the more "adventurous" categories

AHHH...one of my favorite topics.
Many many, many...but here are two CDs for starters; hopefully you can copy onto your iPod.
CD entirely of Sonny Chillingworth called "Sonny Solo" --instead r and r, Hawaiian style. Some selections are on the Slack Key Guitar 1 & 2 collections, but this is a CD exclusively of his music. What a loss--both he and Iz died way too young.

Though you're going to Kauai one of the GREATEST, and least known, collections of Hawaiian music is on a CD called "HoloHolo Maui" purchased at a roadside stand in the village of Kahakuloa, from the wife of one of the artists on it, Richard Ho'opi'i. TRUST ME, Bill "iamq" and all my fellow Hawaii-lovin' Fodorites, this is an amazing CD, with every song worth hearing over and over.
I have about 35 Hawaiian CDs, but these are two of several I return to over and over. p.s. Here's a web site about HoloHolo Maui, including order info:
http://www.ululoa.com/site/hh_maui.html

ALOHA!! and have a great trip to beautiful, beloved Kauai!!

Yeah I remember listening to that station too and being a little surprised at that hybrid of musical styles. Interesting...

Thanks i2, that's the one that I bought!

Cali, thanks for the suggestions. I just ordered the HoloHolo Maui cd.

That radio station is KKCR -- located behind the Princeville Fire Station, heard island-wide _and_ online:
http://www.kkcr.org/live/live.html

It's this state's only full-power community radion station (public radio), offering everything from Hawaiian music (weekdays midnight to 11a.m.) to reggae, country, pop, world, new age -- and 3 local talk shows. Love it!

By the way, Henry Kapono of Cecilio and Kapono is the same one that has a night club (Kapono's) in Aloha Tower Marketplace. He also plays at Dukes on Sunday afternoons.

So if you are ever on Oahu, go see him.

Kapena plays at Dukes on Saturday afternoons. Also other places on Oahu.
Kelly DeLima, the lead singer of Kapena, also does solos on Oahu. He also has at least one CD under Kelly DeLima.
