Children under the age of 10 are not allowed in the Frick, and under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Definately go to the Met. You may need more than one day, so do not fit the Met with some other big museum on the same day. Do the Met untill you are too tired and then plan something low key (dinner, Broadway show, no walking).
My children love having an audio tour in a museum. It keeps them busy and excited and slows them down so that I can enjoy the museums.
The dinosaurs in the AMNH is great. Mythical creatures closes in january, so you may miss that. I recommend the Rose center planetarium highly. It was great.
