Help me choose a NYC Hotel
 

Hello,<BR><BR>My friends and I are going to NYC over Thanksgiving weekend and need help with choosing a hotel. We are looking to be within all of the True TOURISTY sites, such as Rockefellar Center great shopping and so on. Can anyone recommend a good hotel for me? 3-4*'s<BR><BR>Thanks!

Well, the Plaza is very near Rockefeller Center, as is the NY Palace and the Carlisle, but all of these are pretty pricy. Go on Expedia and then click on a hotels info and location. It will bring up the map. Rockefeller Center is at 5th and the mid 50's. It is definetely the best area for shopping, have fun!

The Carlyle, which is at Madison around 76th street, is nowhere near Rockefeller Center.<BR><BR>Hotels around Rockefeller Center include the Plaza, the Pierre, the Palace. All of these will be pretty expensive. For less expensive options, you might check into some Times Square hotels that are in the northern area of Times Square (upper 40's or 50th Street). That will put you only an avenue or two west of Rockefeller Center (which runs from about 50th to 47th streets from Fifth to 6th Avenues).<BR><BR>Good luck & have fun!<BR><BR>

Thanks for the info. The Plaza is indeed gorgeous but a little out of our $$ range. Any opinions on the Metropolitan, formerly Lowes or the Raddison or Park Central?<BR><BR>Thanks again!

The Intercontinental Hotel has a $129 rate now on Expedia.com. This is just a stone's throw from Rockerfeller Center. It's on Park & 48th. From what I remember, the Intercontinental is a pretty good hotel. The price seems like a steal.

Hotels in the Times Square area - within walking distance of 5th Ave.<BR>Marriott Marquis, Renaissance, Crowne Plaza, Broadway Millenium, Doubletree Suite Hotel, Casablanca, Muse, Michelangelo

The Intercontinental is a great hotel and that price is a steal. However, someone else on this site mentioned that it is currently undergoing some serious renovation, so you might check out where your room would be in relation to the jackhammers. Just a thought.<BR><BR>I would steer clear of the Metropolitan. The Loews was never that nice and the Metropolitan doesn't look much better.<BR><BR>The Radisson looks fine. The Park Central is a lovely hotel with a great location -- near the Park and walking distance to Rockefeller Center, theatre district, Fifth Ave shopping, etc.

Lisa,<BR><BR>Thank you for your post. I was a little surprised though about the Metropolitan. It says 3 1/2 *'s and looks nice on the site? I like Park Central too but just thought it may be too far away? What do you think?

All of the above posts are good ones, but I have a basic question. Have you contacted any of these hotels yet? Thanksgiving is next week and I always thought it was next to impossible to get a room in central NYC during Thanksgiving. Do they really have availability this year?

Patrick,<BR><BR>Sadly, all of the hotels plus dozens over are wide open. I couldn't believe my ears when I started calling for availability.

I would suggest the Michelangelo. They had a rate of $189 for a single about a month ago, which may have dropped. Also, they are very likely to upgrade you at no additional charge if they're so underbooked. It's a lovely boutique hotel with really special service.

Sorry! Had the Carlyle confused with the Pierre. The Dillon on Park Avenue isn't too far from a lot of sites and had a great rate a few months ago. It looked beautiful but we ended up staying at the "W" Tuscany instead, which was no big deal. Would have stayed at the "W" Union Square in hindsight.

Nicole:<BR><BR>I've never actually stayed at the Metropolitan (or the Loews) since I live here, but a friend has. She wasn't impressed and the next time she was here on business asked me for another recommendation. I have been to a meeting there and found it to be nothing special. The location is fine, but there are lots of tourists in and out of there all the time -- too much hubub and nothing to write home about.<BR><BR>Of the choices you've mentioned, I'd go with the Park Central.

Oh, one more thing -- the Loews is a very large hotel (lots of rooms), hence why it's so busy. It is also facing two pretty busy streets and may be noisy (a problem in many NYC hotels -- be sure to ask for a room on the "side street" if possible).

My vote would be the Barclay Intercontinential, on Lexington and 48th Street. Good location, excellant hotel and good deals due to ongoing renovation (If scaffolding around the building bothers you, skip it). Ask for a renovated room.<BR><BR>The Dylan Hotel is actually on 41st Street between Park and Madison. A very quiet block on weekends and not particularly attractive anytime of the week, lots of fast food restaurants, and freight entrances of office buildings, although relatively convenient to most attractions.<BR><BR>If you are looking for something less expensive, you may want to check out the Marriott Courtyard on Third Avenue in the 50's.

A few months ago I took my Mom to NYC and we stayed at the EDISON HOTEL (212-840-5000). It's right on Times Square and very nice for the price. <BR><BR>http://www.edisonhotelnyc.com<BR><BR>-Or- Candlewood Suites, it's in Jersey City and only 7 minutes from Manhattan. Hi Nicole,I agree with Frank.The Intercontinental New York on East 48th Street is a great hotel.I just stayed there this past weekend and loved it.They upgraded us to a bigger room with 2 double beds.The location,rooms,service,and the beds<BR>are to die for!! This was our first time to NYC and found the Location and the hotel perfect! The President of Pakistan ( I beleive it was him)<BR>stayed there our last night and we were surrounded by Secret Service Agents and Police vans and cars all night long.We walked in the hotel right behind him and his security.<BR>I'm sure you'll love New York regardless of where you decide to stay.
