Help - Kapalua Bay or Wailea area?

We are going to Maui for only about 6 days so looking to stay in one location - any advice on if we should stay in Wailea or Kapalua Bay? We would stay at the Renaissance hotels at either location. We are looking for a nice beach to relax on, not busy or crowded, good snorkeling, and close to good restaurants, nightlife, etc.

Thanks!

Kapalua's nice, but we really loved staying in the Wailea area. Plus, I believe Wailea's weather is better than the Kapalua part of the island.

Here's a link to my trip report for your info.

TravelDiva, Where did you stay in Wailea? Did you see the Renaissance there - any feedback? Is Wailea close to all the great restaurants you posted on your report? thanks.

My husband and I returned from Maui on Sunday. We divided our 10 day trip between The Ritz at Kapalua Bay and The Wailea Marriott. I personally prefer the Kapalua Bay area and we were fortunate to have great weather. There are some very good restaurants in that area, Plantation House, Sansei, Vino, Roy's etc. It is a short drive to Lahaina and Kaanapali and the drive is along the ocean. Wilea seemed a lot like being back in California rather than Hawaii. Just my personal opinion.

You're in luck! The only Renaissance on Maui is in Wailea. You'll love it. Actually, both Wailea and Kapalua are great. Don't worry, either area has terrific places. Wailea has the best weather conditions to be had on the island [South Shore]. It's closer to the airport [half hour compared to over an hour for Kapalua] and nearer to most of the things you'll want or need. The Travel Diva stayed just a few hotels down from the Renaissance. You'll see it while you're there. You will like your place as well as hers! In between the two places is the Grand Wailea. There's a promonade along the beach connecting the hotels. Relax, you're going to the best island in the world and staying at one of the finest hotels. You will cry when it's time to go home! Aloha

The rooms are better @Renaissance Kapalua Bay, and the beach is prettier, with a reef-protected bay, so the water is calmer for snorkeling than just about any beach in Maui.
