Help in decision
 

Ok...here is the scoop...we have a set of United tickets to use in the next two weeks....perferably this weekend or next....we are looking for a place to go that won't cost us a lot of money and maybe a place we can go without renting a car...free transfers from the airport....any suggestions????

San Antonio? Kind of hot, tho.

You can take a boat ride on the river. There are some trolley rides which aren't expensive - one route takes you to the various missions. You hop off when you want to see one, & catch the next trolley that comes. The other route takes you to the zoo, botanical garden, some museums, the Japanese garden/brackenridge park. You can stroll thru the King William district & look at the beautiful homes - some are open for tours. Great people watching along riverwalk. Lots of restaurants & good food! Great margaritas of every kind imaginable. I've even gone there once by myself & had a lot of fun!

I'm thinking New Orleans. I don't know if you can get a free ride from the airport to your hotel though. Hopefully, find a hotel with a "free" continental breakfast. You can walk the French Quarter and partake of the muffaletta's and po'boys instead of expensive restaurants, ride the streetcar, browse the antique shops, walk around the Garden District. I could go on and on, but a search of this site will provide you with tons of info. Have fun whatever you do!

Me again. If you're traveling from the northeast and it's been a long winter, Florida can be very affordable now. You can rent an efficiency and have Cheerios for breakfast, throw together some sandwiches for lunch, hang on the beach, do some window shopping, and maybe grab a dinner or two out. Perhaps Ft. Lauderdale?

Where's home? How long do you want to be gone? Are you experienced with/frightened by Priceline or Hotwire? Burning interests? Foodies? Culture vultures? So many options.

We live in Cheesehead land (Wisconsin). We are looking to stay for two nights somewhere. We are big into food and people watching...and simply relaxing either at a pool or working out at the fitness center.

We were also thinking about San Diego but are unsure about not having a rental car and misc expenses.

The not wanting to rent a car makes me think of New Orleans too b/c its not needed. Its been in the high 80's all week and last time I checked it should be sunny through Tuesday. Regarding cost most of the hotels should have their summer rates in place which are substantially less.

San Diego is pretty much a year round destination. Boston shouldn't disappoint this time of year and United does fly there. Wash. DC is usually nice now.

Oh, regarding the rental car avoidance and free transfers from airports I think that depends on where you stay.
Hotels sometimes have their own transportation espescially chains like Hilton, Hyatt etc and espescially ones considered "airport" hotels will have courtesy vans. I dont know if any of our New Orleans hotels do and thats because the Super Shuttle is so cheap, like 10.00 or so. Some may have their own though... seems to me I've been behind Sheraton and Hilton vans when leaving he airport often enough. It seems to me the San Diego airport was really close to downtown so it shouldn't be a problem finding a hotel that has transfers there. Good luck

We think New Orleans would be a blast...never been there but have heard many good things....I will have to check flight availabilty....thanks for all your suggestions....keep them coming :)

Agreed that New Orleans has great food and in my experience, the cheaper food was the more memorable. (Cafe du Monde, Felix's Oyster bar)

or Hilton Head if you just want to hang on the pool/beach. Those Pina Coladas do start to eat up the $20's though. As Cheeseheads, you might even find it warm enough to swim. You can rent bikes to get around the island.

also Charleston is a walking city once you get in from the airport, but the hotels may be pricey.

My vote is for New Orleans. Stay in the French Quarter (we like the Royal Sonesta) and you can walk everywhere. Wonderful food (fancy or not), enchanting city, great music, and more to do than you could possibly cover in a weekend (swamp boats, river boats, haunted tours, street artists, garden district, streetcar . . .)

I'd vote for New Orleans - provided very warm & humid weather doesn't bother you.

Vegas or New Orleans... no need for a car. As far as NO, It cost $10.00 a person one way from the airport. Great people watching, food can be cheap, and 3 for 1 drinks in many bars for afternoon and evening hours. Also, opportunity for quiet walks through the garden district. Have fun

I've visited San Diego without a rent car and am about to do it again. They have plenty of trolleys, buses, and ferrys. If you stay downtown, you are within walking distance to a lot of attractions. The only thing you would need a cab for would be a trip to La Jolla.

I have to go along with San Diego. We stayed at the Ramada at Old Town and they picked us up at the airport. We visited Seaworld and the Zoo by taking city Buses.Took a trolley tour around the city that you could get on and off at different tourist spots.

Old Town was a nice area with great Mexican Food.

Try Las vegas. On the strip stay at the Monte-Carlo. Off strip stay at the Orleans.
