Jill: I use homeopathy regularly with my family and have tremendous success. If it is the right remedy it can work very quickly. There are no side effects at all.It is found in a health food store. Do you know of a homeopath near you? Knowing alot of details about your physical/emotional health prior to getting sick is important in determining the correct remedy. I would be happy to give you a suggestion if you would like.

Jill,

Try Buckley's cough medicine. It comes in syrop form. There are two kinds. Get the one that has the decongestant. The advertising campaign is; " It tastes AWFUL, but it WORKS!!!>>. Believe me, it's TRUE!!! You'll feel MUCH better in 1/2 hour. It's the ONLY cough medicine that works for me. It's made of plant extracts, camphor oil, menthol, etc. It's from Canada. In New York, you can buy it at Duane Reede.

Feel Better!!!

Ross.

Jill, I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV! Seriously, I have had to fly several times with painful earaches due to a cold. The ONLY otc medicine that keeps the ear pain away is Sudafed. Trust me. I take it before flying even when I don't have a cold. They now make Sudafed cold/flu, etc. etc. I would try one of those. It will help with all your cold symptoms and hopefully, keep that nasty ear pain away. Generally, Sudafed keeps you awake rather than put you to sleep. Good luck.

Try taking vitamin C and zinc every couple of hours with plenty of liquids. You might also want to try some echinacea and goldenseal. Drink lots of naturally sweetened juices and tea. Try not to take too much medication since that will dehydrate you, which of course, will happen on the plane anyway. Also try some cold-eze - you can suck on those on the plane
Good luck and hope you feel better!

Jill,
I hope you don't take all the stuff recommended here at once or you will really be sick! Hope you feel better.

A local pharmacist recommended this combo to me the last time I had a bad cold, and it worked for me:

1. Sudafed tablets, non-drowsy formula, for stuffiness

2. Robitussin cough capsules, non-drowsy (I don't know about anyone else, but the syrup makes me sick to my stomach. The capsules I can handle)

3. Nasal spray if needed

4. Tylenol for fever

This combo made me feel sort of "propped up," like I knew I had a cold but it was well masked. However, all that non-drowsy stuff wired me and I didn't really sleep for three days! If you HAVE to function and cannot stay home to sleep, this may work for you.

I have miserable, rotten sinuses that always seem to act up and be on the verge of infection just before a big trip. Here's something that I've found and I SWEAR it clears up sinus problems
fast....mix up a salt water solution and
spray up your nose (just like Dristan or other nasal sprays)twice a day. You'll blow your nose like crazy but it really cuts short head colds and sinus infections!

Lee, I've done that and irrigating my sinuses with a saline solution for years. If you use salt, make sure it does NOT contain iodine. The packages are clearly labeled.

But the easier way is to look in the pharmacy for the moisturizing saline solution. The salinity (sp?) is at the optimal level. It's already premixed. Inexpensive. A friend's favorite comment is "Snot - the glue that holds us together." This wonderful little product - uhh, how do I put it - works it's way all around the snot so that when you go to blow your nose you can completely clean it out! Geez, what a wonderful subject!

To Dr.B: 'Data' is plural. So, "Data are reliable." Not "Data is reliable." Geez! With all those Latin derivatives you learn in Med School I am surprised that this one slipped by you, Doc! ( Datum is singular. I know, you were wondering!)

Unfortunately being an asthmatic, I ended up in the emergency room at our local hospital just hours after getting off a plane with somebody sneezing, coughing and hacking behind me for 2 hours. Jill, I just can't say I really like you right now.......

Sorry traveler I truly have terrible asthma and someone coughing behind you in no way will cause an asthma attack. The stale recycled air, however may trigger allergies and cause an asthma attack. Also my husband is a doctor and it takes a few days before you will catch a cold from someone else - not minutes.

How about maybe I caught it on the way to vacation then, it was a few days in advance and there were "sickies" on that flight, too - and according to the ER doctor, it started out as bronchitis and evolved. My point being, be considerate of other people in closed spaces.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your tips. I took 12 hour drixoral, drank lots of liquids including green tea and took extra vitamin c and zinc. I did not sneeze and/or hack on anyone and slept most of the way. My in-laws to be are very nice and were very understanding. We are planning on getting married in June (no destination wedding) in our Church by my cousin who is a priest and we are having a small reception. For our honeymoon we are going to Paris. So, you will see more of me over at the European board. Thanks everyone for your very helpful suggestions/treatments. You guys are the best! I wish everyone a wonderful Holiday Season.

Yes traveler I agree but it's so easy to catch a cold anywhere. I have a terrible bronchitis right now and don't even go out that much! I'm staying in so I don't infect anyone.
